Job Title: PhD Graduate Student in Machine Learning and Hurricane Prediction

Department: School of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, Georgia Tech

Description:

The Climate Risk & Extreme Dynamics Group in the School of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at the Georgia Institute of Technology is seeking one exceptional PhD student to advance the scientific understanding of risks associated with climate extremes through pioneering research. This work emphasizes the integration of physics-based modeling with state-of-the-art machine learning techniques to develop innovative solutions for predicting and mitigating the impacts of extreme weather events. The successful candidate will contribute to a SANDIA National Laboratories-funded project, focused on improving multiple-hazard hurricane predictions using physics-informed deep learning models. This interdisciplinary research combines advanced theoretical approaches with machine learning innovations to tackle the growing challenges posed by these climate extremes.

Research within the group integrates observational analysis, numerical modeling, and the application of physics-informed machine learning and data mining techniques. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to apply these methodologies, with a particular focus on advancing physics-informed deep learning models for hurricane predictions. Candidates will also be encouraged to develop and pursue their own research interests, fostering intellectual independence and innovation. Additionally, there may be opportunities to spend one or two semesters as interns at SANDIA National Laboratories, leveraging SANDIA’s state-of-the-art research facilities, expanding their investigations, and collaborating with leading scientists to build a robust professional network in the field.

Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will work under the direction of Dr. Ali Sarhadi, conducting original research, writing manuscripts for publication, presenting findings at professional conferences, and collaborating with faculty and fellow graduate students at Georgia Tech. Furthermore, candidates will have the opportunity to pursue a dual degree with other departments, enhancing their interdisciplinary research experience and academic development.

Qualifications:

• Open to graduating master’s students and senior undergraduate students with a background in computer science, computational science and engineering, physics, or mathematics. Students in computer science with a strong motivation to work on climate change impact research are especially encouraged to apply.

• Strong programming skills in Python, with demonstrated experience in advanced machine learning and deep learning techniques, including generative AI models, Transformers, graphical neural networks, and reinforcement learning. Extensive experience applying these techniques to real-world problems is essential.

• Solid understanding of, and the ability to analyze large datasets.

• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

• Excellent communication and organizational skills.

• Availability to start in the summer or fall 2025 semester.

• Must be a U.S. citizen to meet project and funding requirements.

Application Process:

Qualified candidates should submit a resume, a brief cover letter explaining their interest in the position and their relevant experience, and contact information for two references. Applications should be sent to sarhadi at gatech.edu<mailto:sarhadi at gatech.edu>.

Deadline: May 15th, 2025

We encourage all enthusiastic and driven candidates who want to make a significant impact through their research on real-world climate change problems to apply. This is an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience and familiarize yourself with climate extremes and their challenges.
