Position Overview
The Department of Earth, Environmental, and Planetary Sciences (DEEPS) at Brown University invites applications for a full-time Scientific and Web Programmer. We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated individual to design and implement interactive, user-friendly dashboards that display environmental sensor data and maintain the web presence of science projects within the OCEANS (Ocean Cryosphere Ecosystems Atmosphere and Solutions) research group.
This position sits at the intersection of data science, environmental research, and web development. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Prof. Emanuele Di Lorenzo and collaborate closely with a multidisciplinary team of scientists, engineers, and environmental experts.

Key Responsibilities
Design, develop, and maintain interactive dashboards for environmental sensor data
Implement real-time data pipelines with QA/QC protocols and outlier detection
Maintain and update the public-facing web presence of OCEANS group science projects
Collaborate with scientists to ensure data is translated into accessible and meaningful visualizations
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree with strong computational emphasis or equivalent experience
1 - 2 years experience in a related field
Familiarity with Linux/UNIX systems and shell scripting
Expertise with Python and at least 1 other programming language (Java, JavaScript, MATLAB, Julia, C, C++, C#, Rust)
Experience with scientific computing libraries in Python such as Numpy, Xarray, Dask, Pandas or equivalent
Experience with distributed version control systems (e.g., Git)
Experience with web programming (Javascript/HTML/CSS)
Interest in user interface (UI) and user experience (UX) design
Basic understanding of spatial data formats (e.g., Shapefiles, GeoJSON) and databases (e.g., PostGIS, SQL)
Familiarity with at least one GIS software (ArcGIS, QGIS, etc.)
Experience with QAQC protocols for data cleaning
Additional Desirable Qualifications
An advanced degree (Master's or Doctorate) with a strong computational emphasis
Experience using database query languages (e.g., SQL)
Experience with open-source web mapping libraries (Mapbox, Leaflet)
Familiarity with cloud computing software and services (e.g., GCP, AWS, Microsoft Azure)
Expertise with front end web frameworks (React)
Knowledge of RESTful APIs (use and implementation)
Familiarity with Esri ArcGIS software (ArcGIS Enterprise, ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Pro, Portal for ArcGIS, and ArcSDE)
Experience writing Python scripts using the ArcGIS API for Python, arcpy, and open-source geospatial libraries
Experience with ESRI web mapping frameworks including ArcGIS Maps SDK for JavaScript
