Dear Colleagues,
Agroecosystem Sustainability Center (ASC)<https://asc.illinois.edu/> led by Kaiyu Guan<http://faculty.nres.illinois.edu/%7Ekaiyuguan/> at University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) is recruiting multiple PhD students, postdocs, and research scientists on ecosystem modeling, remote sensing, and AI. Detailed information can be found here<http://faculty.nres.illinois.edu/~kaiyuguan/ASC_UIUC_recruiting_2025.pdf> and the attachment.
We are recruiting talents from the following research topics: (see a recent review<https://linkinghub.elsevier.com/retrieve/pii/S0012825223001514>).
1) Advancing ecosystem modeling (using the ecosys model) for coupled carbon, water and nutrient cycles in agricultural ecosystems. The candidates will work on improving existing ecosystem models or developing new modules with new theories and observational evidence.
2) Advancing Artificial Intelligence and Model-Data Fusion by integrating advanced process-based modeling with data to quantify agricultural ecosystem services, e.g. GHG (N2O, CH4), soil health, water quality. The candidates will work on building or improving effective, scalable and efficient model-data fusion methods, using supercomputers and AI.
3) Advancing ecosystem remote sensing, including ground/airborne/satellite hyperspectral sensing, and big-data analytics of satellite algorithms. The candidates will work on generating new insights and data products from geospatial big data with radiative transfer modeling, computer vision, and AI.
Examples of our recent research highlights include: (i) "System-of-systems" solution to quantify field-level agricultural carbon outcomes (a review<https://linkinghub.elsevier.com/retrieve/pii/S0012825223001514>); (ii) AI-based Knowledge-Guided Machine Learning for ecosystem modeling (KGML-Ag<https://asc.illinois.edu/>); (iii) Process modeling to quantify agroecosystem dynamics (carbon budget<https://drive.google.com/file/d/1_Ll8IEycDLNiuVJcz--OLme2YoU0hK7x/view>,<https://drive.google.com/file/d/1_Ll8IEycDLNiuVJcz--OLme2YoU0hK7x/view> cover crop<https://drive.google.com/file/d/1eV5fwd0wK-UliIUWotmQdiGdz39kFTL6/view>,<https://drive.google.com/file/d/1eV5fwd0wK-UliIUWotmQdiGdz39kFTL6/view> nitrogen<https://drive.google.com/file/d/1l326VSq760wq7Z8NgY3zLc3bttlxJHzW/view>); (iii) Cross-scale sensing for agroecosystem variables (cover crop<https://drive.google.com/file/d/1_a6mbQkRkURD1ix6AS4_nb7QAoZmVTxW/view>,<https://drive.google.com/file/d/1_a6mbQkRkURD1ix6AS4_nb7QAoZmVTxW/view> crop nitrogen<https://drive.google.com/file/d/1mz2KGEcjmxMD00BrV7sdQG6fJoUzsy0D/view>,<https://drive.google.com/file/d/1mz2KGEcjmxMD00BrV7sdQG6fJoUzsy0D/view> tillage practices<https://drive.google.com/file/d/1BOnSSXBz33r6XvctQNfCSomo4YNVye5N/view>); (iv) Large-scale satellite algorithms and products (photosynthesis<https://drive.google.com/file/d/1mVBAXLbeVLouhFoFpCuMxGCkwZegpqq3/view>,<https://drive.google.com/file/d/1mVBAXLbeVLouhFoFpCuMxGCkwZegpqq3/view> evapotranspiration<https://drive.google.com/file/d/1zMq3tel8lAvcJ7nv8ErM99vlgN5_6SaY/view>,<https://drive.google.com/file/d/1zMq3tel8lAvcJ7nv8ErM99vlgN5_6SaY/view> marginal land<https://drive.google.com/file/d/1mBe3IT-8Gt9aGhBjf6Ju0tfF-kMEO_cu/view>,<https://drive.google.com/file/d/1mBe3IT-8Gt9aGhBjf6Ju0tfF-kMEO_cu/view> crop yield<https://drive.google.com/file/d/1kpmmp1uLInTP6_n99IfSux75eGYxLtUT/view>,<https://drive.google.com/file/d/1kpmmp1uLInTP6_n99IfSux75eGYxLtUT/view> cover crop<https://drive.google.com/file/d/1U8yg-2gIUoXXm5oxGqMrmY6jrZhCmnFc/view>); (v) Water sustainability (irrigation<https://drive.google.com/file/d/1kzM5q8UcnWy9vysNXPwadG2zXgcDoAwL/view>,<https://drive.google.com/file/d/1kzM5q8UcnWy9vysNXPwadG2zXgcDoAwL/view> excessive moisture<https://drive.google.com/file/d/1UGyMyBHgaLPhnQU8o4rq5Qf9DExrzKnF/view>,<https://drive.google.com/file/d/1UGyMyBHgaLPhnQU8o4rq5Qf9DExrzKnF/view> tile drainage<https://drive.google.com/file/d/1vWUJnZbWE00HZHqFmR_HT3NhZ-TKPuVC/view>).
Successful candidates will work with a transdisciplinary team composed by leading experts in earth system modeling, plant physiology, biogeochemistry, hydrology, soil science, agronomy, and remote sensing, AI, which can be found here: https://asc.illinois.edu/people/faculty/.
