The Dauphin Island Sea Lab (DISL) invites applications for up to 3 faculty
positions in marine science and conservation. DISL faculty receive the
title of Senior Marine Scientist and a joint faculty appointment at an
Alabama University with rank commensurate with experience. Although we
expect to hire at the level of Senior Marine Scientist I (equivalent to
Assistant Professor), established candidates seeking higher ranks will be
considered.
We seek candidates conducting novel, cutting-edge research in the benthos,
water column, or aspects of organismal biology and ecology to enhance the
broad field of marine conservation. It is desirable for the candidate to
develop at least part of their research program in the Northern Gulf of
Mexico and to interact with stakeholders in this region. Areas of focus may
include but are not limited to community ecology, microbial ecology,
microplastics or ecotoxicology, wetland ecology, pathology, nutrient and
food web modeling, landscape and movement ecology, organismal biology,
biomechanics, or social aspects of human-environment interactions.
Interdisciplinary research with approaches applying innovative field,
laboratory, or numerical model-based methods (or a combination of
approaches) is encouraged.
The successful candidate will be expected to:
- Develop and maintain an extramurally funded research program
- Teach one graduate course during the academic year and one
undergraduate course during the DISL’s summer program (
https://www.disl.org/univ-prog/undergrad)
- Advise students (primarily at the graduate level)
- Participate in Dauphin Island Sea Lab outreach activities
Qualifications:
- Ph.D. (or similar terminal degree) in some aspect of the
marine sciences, environmental science, biology, ecology, or a related
discipline at the time of appointment.
- Proven research background productivity as evidenced by a
peer reviewed publication record and recognition in the field commensurate
with experience.
Preferences:
- Research interests that complement those of existing DISL
faculty.
- Post-doctoral experience.
- Strong track record developing a well-funded research
program.
- Demonstrated excellence in teaching, with strong
communication skills.
- Experience with and commitment to quality mentoring and
advising of students.
The Dauphin Island Sea Lab (http://www.disl.org) is the administrative home
for Alabama’s Marine Environmental Sciences Consortium, consisting of 21
state and private colleges and universities. The facility is located on
Dauphin Island, a barrier island on the Alabama coast in the northern Gulf
of Mexico with 14 faculty members and ~40 graduate students in residence.
In addition to offering over 25 courses for undergraduates in the summer,
the Sea Lab hosts a public aquarium that is focused on the habitats and
ecosystems of the northern Gulf of Mexico region, and is home to the
Discovery Hall Program, a nationally known K-12 education program. Dauphin
Island is near the metropolitan area of Mobile with a population of 400,000
and a vibrant history and culture.
Candidates should send an application letter, curriculum vitae, research
and teaching philosophy statements (maximum three pages for each), and the
names and contact information of three references to Dr. Ron Baker, Faculty
Search Committee, Dauphin Island Sea Lab, 101 Bienville Blvd., Dauphin
Island, AL, 36528. Electronic applications are preferred and should be
emailed to facultysearch at disl.edu. Questions about the search should also
be addressed to facultysearch at disl.edu. The position will remain open
until filled.
