Tenure-Track Assistant Professor in Applied GIS / Geographic Information Science (Two Positions)
The Geography program in the School of Integrated Sciences (SIS) at James Madison University invites applications for two tenure-track assistant professor positions in applied GIS starting August 2025, part of a broader hiring initiative across SIS themed “Technology for Resilient Futures.” This is an exciting opportunity to join a thriving, student-centered program with research and curricular strengths across physical, human, human-environment geography, and geospatial computing. We are seeking colleagues who can integrate and develop GIS and geospatial technology to build our students’ skills and bring new understanding to critical environmental and human challenges.
As part of a supportive faculty team and with 200 Geography majors, successful candidates will thrive in a collaborative, outward-looking context and bring a passion for inclusive engaged learning. Our faculty are dedicated to innovatively shaping the future of geographical scholarship and education in this student-focused setting. Our award-winning Geography program (recently recognized as an AAG national “Program of Excellence”) is part of a larger unit with other multidisciplinary programs totaling over 700 majors and 50 faculty, and advanced computing and lab facilities. We encourage collaborative research and cross-curricular efforts across our dynamic programs. We welcome candidates from a variety of backgrounds, including those with professional expertise using geospatial technologies.
We are seeking new colleagues to deepen our well-integrated GIS and applied geospatial technology teaching at a range of levels, and who bring versatility to foster skills across the curriculum. We enthusiastically invite those who can help develop geospatial, programming, analytic and visualization skills for students of all backgrounds, within and beyond the Geography major, including in companion programs in SIS. Candidates’ technical focus should be integrated with areas of topical interest.
We will start reviewing applications on 11/10/2024. Please contact Dr. Xiaojing Tang (tang3xx at jmu.edu<mailto:tang3xx at jmu.edu>) if you have any questions.
