Hello,

The Center for Western Weather and Water Extremes <https://cw3e.ucsd.edu/> at
Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California San Diego, is
seeking an Associate Project Scientist. Applications accepted initially
through 30 November but will remain open until filled. Starting salary
range is up to $111,400. Please see the job description below or at this
link <https://apol-recruit.ucsd.edu/JPF04053> for more information and

Position description

Lead efforts in conducting data denial experiments for Atmospheric River
reconnaissance (AR Recon) observations. The position also leads a team of
quantitative analysts providing input into flight planning for AR Recon
operations. With approved PI exception, may be tasked with writing and
achieving independent funding with proposals on atmospheric data
assimilation, numerical weather prediction, initial condition sensitivity,
atmospheric dynamics, and remote sensing. Mentor undergraduates, graduate
students, and postdocs. Provide service toward building an equitable and
diverse scholarly environment. The position will require a comprehensive
understanding of synoptic and mesoscale meteorology, weather forecasting,
and verification of numerical weather prediction models. The research will
focus on extreme precipitation events along the US West Coast and in
particular atmospheric rivers. The position will require strong programming
skills to analyze the data, support the development of the regional
numerical weather prediction model at CW3E, and develop new decision
support tools. Uses forecasting, modeling and data analysis skills to
support both research and near real time operations at CW3E. Lead CW3E and
external colleagues in conducting data denial experiments for Atmospheric
River reconnaissance (AR Recon) observations. The position also leads a
team of quantitative analysts providing input into flight planning for AR
Recon operations. Coordinates the work of a team of CW3E staff and external
collaborators on open solicitation projects from NASA/JPL and NOAA that are
related to atmospheric river modeling and observational analysis. Provides
support to CW3E managers on the hiring process by assisting in writing job
cards and participates in screening and interviewing candidates for the
Center. With PI exception, may act as PI or Co-PI to lead in writing
project proposals and, as needed, coordinate with other CW3E PI's in
preparing project proposals. Takes a lead role in the development of radar
data assimilation algorithms for atmospheric rivers and heavy precipitation
events along the US West Coast. Work direct postdoc researchers at CW3E, to
include ensuring that postdocs meet the requirements and expectations set
by the university and the Center for Western Weather and Water Extremes
(CW3E; http://cw3e.ucsd.edu/) goals in improving ensemble Atmospheric
Rivers (ARs) prediction.
Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

The positions require a PhD in Atmospheric Sciences, or equivalent degree,
in a relevant field at time of application and candidates should have a
competitive record of publication, as well as evidence of the ability to
conduct and fund an active research program consistent with career level.
Additional qualifications (required at time of start)

Two to three years experience with research related to data assimilation
and impact studies as well as atmospheric rivers and extreme precipitation.
