Job Title: Assistant Professor of Geography Department/School: Department of Geosciences Location: Fayetteville, AR Start date: August 11, 2025
Position Summary: The Department of Geosciences in the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Arkansas invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Geography to start in August 2025. This is a standard nine-month faculty appointment.
We seek an individual specializing in dendrochronology (tree-ring dating) or in climatology, with experience in proxy data development and/or analysis, climatology, hydrology, or forest and environmental dynamics. Expertise in climatology is the minimum requirement. Experience with dendroclimatology is the preferred requirement, especially those candidates who apply one or more of these research areas to specific problems in the broadly defined geosciences, such as climate variability, climate change, water supply, and the socioeconomic impact of climate extremes. The successful candidate will be expected to have or develop an independent, externally funded research program that complements ongoing collaborative research in the department and university (e.g., supporting some combination of the three signature research areas at the University of Arkansas, which are the data revolution, human and community health, resilient and sustainable futures https://arkansasresearch.uark.edu/signature-research-areas/). Teaching duties may include earth science, climate change, meteorology, sustainable natural resources, and classes in the candidate's field of interest.
Regular, reliable, and non-disruptive attendance is an essential job duty, as is the ability to create and maintain collegial, harmonious working relationships with others.
About the Department
The Department of Geosciences is an interdisciplinary program composed of faculty in Geography and Geology, offering undergraduate and graduate degrees in geography, geology, earth science, and geosciences (http://geosciences.uark.edu). The candidate may also work closely with the Center for Advanced Spatial Technologies (CAST; https://cast.uark.edu/), where many of the Department of Geosciences faculty are affiliated, and with the Arkansas Water Resources Center and the Environmental Dynamics Program (https://environmental-dynamics.uark.edu/).
Duties will include:
* 40% Teaching
* 40% Research
* 20% Service

Minimum Qualifications:
With submitted materials, the candidate must demonstrate
* A doctoral degree in geography or a related discipline from an accredited institution of higher education conferred by the start of employment.
* A demonstrated ability to teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
* A demonstrated ability to develop an independent, externally funded research program.

Preferred Qualifications:

* An active research agenda that concentrates on dendrochronology and climatology, a field research focus on proxy data development, and expertise in the analysis of instrumental and proxy hydroclimate data.
* A demonstrated commitment to teaching classes at the undergraduate and graduate level that complement the current course catalog and to mentoring students by directing or serving on thesis and dissertation committees.
* Demonstration of collegiality and ability to excel in collaborative environments.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)
* Proven knowledge/expertise in the dating method of dendrochronology (tree-ring dating).
* Proven knowledge/expertise in modern climatology and paleoclimatology, including the temporal and spatial analysis of modern and paleoclimate data.
* Knowledge/expertise in the time series analysis of tree-ring and instrumental climate data.
