Open position: Postdoctoral Researcher in atmospheric microplastics (MP) modeling
Activities: Applications are invited for a 18-month postdoctoral position starting between March 2024 and
July 2024 as part of the (Emission, atmospheric transport and deposition of microplastics ¨C ATMO-
PLASTIC) ANR project based at IGE (Institut des G¨¦osciences de l'Environnement, https://www.ige-
grenoble.fr) in Grenoble, France. Research will focus on developing a 3D chemical transport model of
atmospheric microplastics at the global scale and supporting observational analysis using trajectory
modeling. This work will be conducted in close collaboration with observers within the ATMO-PLASTIC
project to provide insight into the sources of MP aerosols and their fate globally. In collaboration with
the team, the aim is to deliver a new description of MP aerosols globally.
Microplastics (MP) are an emerging contaminant, with significant levels found from Oceans to remote
terrestrial locations and potential (in)direct effects on ecosystem health. The quantity of MP polluting
the terrestrial environment is unknown, with knowledge gaps in the global MP mass balance and
understanding how MP are transported to terrestrial ecosystems. The ATMO-PLASTIC project will
therefore investigate the role of the atmosphere in global MP cycling.
This postdoc focuses on using atmospheric modeling with the GEOS-Chem model (https://geos-
chem.seas.harvard.edu/) to develop a novel description of atmospheric MP emissions, cycling,
atmospheric transport, and deposition. In addition, aerosol filters samples of atmospheric MP have
been collected and are being analyzed for MP content at a global scale. This postdoctoral position will
also contribute to understanding the MP aerosols that are collected on filters using trajectory
modeling. ATMO-PLASTIC project data will be crucial in calibrating atmospheric transport models of
global MP emission, transport and deposition. Such models are necessary to estimate the global impact
of MP on ecosystem and human health.
Skills
¡ñ Ph.D. in atmospheric aerosols, atmospheric chemistry, climate sciences, or related field
¡ñ Knowledge about earth and/or atmospheric modeling
¡ñ Knowledge of microplastics
¡ñ Experience with HPC and supercomputing environments
¡ñ Experience with Unix and Fortran
¡ñ Knowledge of NetCDF encoding and related data analysis tools (cdo, nco)
¡ñ Programming skill : scripting and visualization (e.g. python)
¡ñ Excellent skills in written and spoken English
¡ñ Collaborative spirit and communication skill
¡ñ Ability to work in a fast paced, international, team oriented environment
Ability to travel to workshops and meetings, including visits to Toulouse for collaborative work with
the team may be required. The research will be conducted in either French or English, however it is
expected that the non-French speaking candidate will make his or her best to learn the basics of French
in order to facilitate communication and integration into the laboratory.
