My group of Water Quality at DERM (Miami-Dade County) has an opening
position for a Biologist 2 (Job ID: 84739).  *Apply before March  13th,
2024.*



My group is in charge of the Water Quality Monitoring Program of Biscayne
Bay and Miami Dade Canals.  We measure physical parameters using
multiparameter sondes (EXO-2) and collect water samples for chemical
analysis in the watershed of Biscayne Bay every month.



The *Biologist 2* will serve as *the field and logistic Coordinator for the
Biscayne Bay Surface Water Quality Monitoring Program (BBWQ) and the
Sanitary Sewer Overflow monitoring program (SSO)*. These projects require
that the field work and collection of samples are planned, coordinated, and
conducted in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and in a
timely fashion to obtain accurate results.  Some examples of the tasks
within these two programs includes: coordinating teams and scheduling
staff, managing and preparing field equipment (Boats, Vehicles,
Multiparameter sondes, sample bottles, etc.), preparing paperwork (COCs,
field sheets, labels, etc.), collecting samples, coordinating internal and
external lab deliverables,  maintenance of the sampling equipment and water
purification systems, inventory of the water quality program's consumable
supplies, coordinate and manage the routine maintenance and repairs of two
boats, county vehicles and diverse instrumentation used for water quality
monitoring, issue resolution, performing data analysis, statistical
analysis, producing maps and tables, preparing reports and conducting
administrative duties (purchases, timesheets, evaluations, etc.).   The
need for attention to detail and consistency during the execution of the
projects related tasks and assignments is critical, since the monitoring
programs have strict timelines, Quality Assurance and Quality Control
(QA/QC) requirements and established Standard Operating Procedures. This
position will supervise 2 people and coordinate the work of 10 people for
the Water Quality Monitoring Program.





*The preferred candidate* *should have extensive knowledge and experience *
*in **Water Quality Parameters,* good navigation skills to drive small
boats (25 ft) across the Bay, experienced driver in the city of large
vehicles (Vans & trucks), and must like field work since at least 60% of
the time will be sampling in the canals and the Bay.



*Preferred Education, work experience and skills:*

   - Master’s degree in a relevant scientific discipline such as
   oceanography, marine chemistry and marine biology.


   - Extensive Knowledge of water quality in rivers, canals, estuaries and
   ocean.


   - At least five years of professional experience in marine science
   working in the field with water quality parameters.
   - Experience managing staff, working and building relationships across
   different cultures and collaborating with members of a professional staff.
   - Experience performing data analysis, statistical analysis, producing
   maps and tables, and interpreting water quality data to prepare technical
   reports.
   - Experience developing field plans for environmental research studies.
   - Experience working to meet tight deadlines, completing unexpected
   projects, and effectively managing a demanding workload.
   - Experience training staff in related field work and laboratory
   protocols including sample equipment preparation and collection, paperwork
   completion, trailering and navigation, among others.


   - Skilled at organizing and prioritizing multiple projects and
   completing tasks with accuracy and independence.
   - Ability to handle many tasks simultaneously, with speed, accuracy, and
   courtesy, show initiative, and exhibit insightful planning and
   understanding of scientific concepts.


   - Exhibit leadership skills and maturity under periodic stressful
   situations and challenging weather conditions for directing field work.
   - Ability to quickly identify relevant issues and solutions.
   - Excellent writing, editing, communication, listening, organizational
   and research skills.
   - Strong ability to write reports and communicate technical concepts
   clearly and concisely.
   - Great interpersonal skills and a team player to interact and
   communicate effectively with coworkers and supervisors, always keeping a
   professional, flexible, and positive attitude.
