Research Scientist Position: Airborne Observations of Atmospheric
Composition

The Goddard Earth Sciences Technology and Research II (GESTAR II)
consortium at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) invites
applications for a research position in the field of chemistry or physics
to work in airborne observations of atmospheric composition. Research will
be conducted as a part of NASA’s Atmospheric Chemistry and Dynamics
Laboratory.

The Atmospheric Chemistry and Dynamics Laboratory advances understanding of
changes in the Earth’s radiation balance, air quality, and the ozone layer
that result from changes in atmospheric composition. Using a combination of
satellite data, atmospheric models, and in situ observations, the
laboratory strives to understand: the factors that control stratospheric
ozone and trace gasses that influence ozone, the natural processes and
human activity that impact the composition of Earth’s troposphere, and the
impact of climate change on future concentrations of stratospheric ozone
and tropospheric gasses.

We are seeking a scientist to calibrate, maintain, and repair existing
instrumentation for atmospheric trace gas measurements, collaborate with
scientists and engineers on development of new airborne instrumentation,
and assist with deployment of instruments on airborne and ground-based
field campaigns. Examples of recent field deployments include ASIA-AQ
<https://espo.nasa.gov/asia-aq/content/ASIA-AQ>, AEROMMA
<https://csl.noaa.gov/projects/aeromma/>, and BlueFlux
<https://earth.gsfc.nasa.gov/acd/campaigns/nasa-carbon-monitoring-system-blueflux>
.

Required Qualifications:

   - Ph.D. in chemistry, physics, or related discipline
   - Expertise in research instrumentation, including electronics and data
   acquisition
   - Expertise in data analysis software, such as MATLAB, Python, IGOR,
   IDL, etc.
   - Demonstrated ability to disseminate research findings through oral and
   written communications

Preferred Skills:

   - Background in atmospheric chemistry
   - Experience in molecular spectroscopy
   - Expertise in gas sampling and detection techniques (vacuum and flow
   techniques)

The successful candidate will join NASA GSFC’s In Situ Observations team as
a part of the GESTAR II Consortium which supports over 140 researchers
based primarily at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. GESTAR II researchers
work to create extensive opportunities for breakthroughs in earth and
atmospheric science research, carrying out observational, experimental and
theoretical research in support of NASA strategic Earth Science mission
objectives.

Goddard’s Earth Science Division is home to about 200 civil servants and
over 1200 collaborating researchers and support personnel, dedicated to
studying the Earth as an integrated system that includes the atmosphere,
oceans, biosphere, cryosphere, and geosphere. The Division operates as a
component of the Sciences and Exploration Directorate that collaborate on
interdisciplinary research with the Astrophysics Science, Heliophysics
Science, and Solar System Exploration Divisions.

The nominal starting date is Fall, 2024, but alternate dates are possible
depending on availability.

Candidates should provide a cover letter, CV (including publication list),
and a 3-page statement of research interests. Short-listed candidates will
be asked to supply three letters of reference at a later date. All
materials and inquiries should be sent by email Subject line: Task 208:
Researcher Position to: Halley Thompson (halleyt at umbc.edu)

Completed applications received by August 9, 2024 will receive full
consideration, however the posting will remain open until the position is
filled.

Salary and benefits are competitive, commensurate with experience and
qualifications. The GESTAR II consortium and NASA/GSFC are committed to
building a diverse research community and encourages applications from
women, racial and ethnic minorities, individuals with disabilities and
veterans. All GESTAR II institutions are Affirmative Action, Equal
Opportunity Employers.
