The Synoptic Meteorology Group within the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences (ATOC) at the University of Colorado Boulder invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate with a comprehensive understanding of midlatitude synoptic and mesoscale dynamics, as well as the ability to analyze ensembles of climate model output and conduct high-resolution modeling experiments. The successful candidate will join a collaborative research team in ATOC (Andrew Winters) and the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics (LASP; Brian Toon) at CU Boulder to investigate the impacts of armed nuclear conflict on the frequency and dynamics of synoptic-scale extreme weather events, such as heat waves, cold waves, and heavy precipitation events using an ensemble of available climate model simulations. Emphasis will be placed on understanding how injections of black carbon into the lower stratosphere translate to changes in the synoptic to mesoscale dynamics that foster the production of the aforementioned extreme weather events and their subsequent impacts. The position has an initial term of 1 year, with a possible extension subject to performance and availability of funding. Salary is $65–75K per year including full benefits. Applications received prior to July 22, 2024 will receive full consideration, but the position will remain open until filled.
