Join the Arctic team as a Research Assistant III to contribute to the establishment and operations of a new Arctic carbon monitoring network which includes the establishment of new eddy covariance monitoring sites across the Arctic-boreal region and coordination and support for existing flux sites. This position is part of a larger project to monitor and forecast Arctic-boreal carbon fluxes. This position is part of Permafrost Pathways<https://permafrost.woodwellclimate.org/?gclid=Cj0KCQjwtJKqBhCaARIsAN_yS_mXNUZNaHI3lC2CKuFCNmq59iQGwKMhVB-ET3DjVzCXvtTU5YOt0r8aAtl9EALw_wcB>, to monitor and to project Arctic-boreal carbon emissions, inform climate mitigation policy, and facilitate climate adaptation in permafrost regions. This position will work within a highly collaborative environment and be supported by a strong project team including process modelers, remote sensing experts, field scientists, a project manager, communications and policy experts.



Responsibilities include but not limited to:

  *   Work closely with project scientists and collaborators to establish new eddy covariance flux sites and provide support for existing sites as needed to ensure data continuity and coverage
  *   Travel internationally to establish and maintain eddy covariance flux sites for several 2-3 week-long trips per year
  *   Assist with collection, processing, quality checking, and archiving of eddy covariance flux data
  *   Assist with purchasing, construction, installation and maintenance of eddy covariance and other micrometeorological instruments
  *   Troubleshoot, maintain, and calibrate instrumentation to maximize data quality and coverage
  *   Assist with data analysis
  *   Represent Permafrost Pathways at industry/technical conferences such as Ameriflux Data/Tech Workshop, AGU, etc
  *   Work independently from the team leaders, while working on and away from the Center
  *   Take on leadership roles at the Center, including serving on committees (e.g., Safety and Space Committees) and presenting at project and organization meetings (e.g., Climate Café)
  *   Lead first author paper using data from flux network tower sites
  *   Coordinate with research personnel, including PIs, station managers, technicians and research assistants



Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  *   Prior hands on experience troubleshooting scientific or technical equipment
  *   Proficiency with scientific software and basic data analysis using Matlab, Python and/or R or similar programming
  *   Excellent interpersonal, teamwork, and communication skills
  *   Excellent organization and documentation skills
  *   Experience setting up and maintaining eddy covariance instrumentation preferred
  *   Collecting, processing, and synthesizing eddy-covariance flux data preferred
  *   Experience with remote power systems (solar, wind, etc.) preferred
  *   Knowledge of Arctic carbon cycling, Arctic ecology, and/or climate change research preferred
  *   Ability to travel up to 20-25%, several 2-3 week-long trips per year, domestically and internationally



Qualifications and Experience:

  *   Master's degree in Biogeochemistry, Earth System Science, Environmental Science, Ecology, Atmospheric Science, or a related field and 1+ years relevant experience
  *   Bachelor's degree in Biogeochemistry, Earth System Science, Environmental Science, Ecology, Atmospheric Science, or a related field and 3+ years relevant experience

In the field, the physical requirements of this role include:

  *   Air, train, vehicle travel to access field locations
  *   Driving a vehicle or ATV to access field locations
  *   Walking, hiking, climbing to access field locations
  *   Paddling, canoeing to access field locations
  *   Standing and sitting for sustained periods
  *   Frequent bending, squatting, and kneeling
  *   Reaching overhead
  *   Climbing ladders
  *   Use of manual and power tools including shovels, saws, drills, and hammers
  *   Ability to lift up to 25lbs up to 10 times/day
  *   Ability to carry up to 25lbs up to 10 times/day
  *   Ability to push/pull up to 25lbs up to 10 times/day

Fixed-term:  2 years with potential to extend.

Classification and Compensation: This is a full-time, salaried, exempt position, the annual salary range is $61,500 to $68,000 dependent on qualifications/experience. Woodwell offers a generous benefits package and work life balance.
