The Geospatial Data Manager will work as part of a team within the Global Science Business Unit, providing a broad range of support to the Science Capacity team in coordination with the Spatial Conservation Science, Climate Science, Economics & Governance, and Human Dimensions teams. The Science Capacity program manages and implements science-related resources, including geospatial data and associated analytical methods, training, mentoring, peer-review services, communities of practice, knowledge management, a science survey, and science flagship events.

Global Science partners with regions and global teams to provide critical science, technical
expertise, and capacity building in support of achieving the organization's 2030 goals. The Science Capacity program is designed to meet the needs of TNC science and conservation staff with flexibility and inclusivity in mind, aligning with project and career goals to maximize participation. The program is aligned with the One Conservancy Science Plan. It empowers science staff to achieve their maximum potential, supporting scientists across TNC's global reach to achieve the organization's 2030 Goals for people and nature.

This is a fully remote position. The position requires travel and working flexible hours as needed. The work environment involves only infrequent exposure to disagreeable elements and minor physical exertion and/or strain. The Geospatial Data Manager reports to the Global Director of Science Capacity.

We’re looking for someone with strong experience in spatial data management and analysis. The ideal candidate should have experience developing and implementing spatial data management policies and procedures, in-depth knowledge of data standards and technologies relevant to geospatial data, and modeling and analytic skills to draw insights for conservation decision-making. In particular, the Geospatial Data Manager will coordinate closely with Spatial and Climate Science teams within Global Science. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the ongoing conservation mission by providing critical resources to support the work of our science staff!

The Geospatial Data Manager, a vital member of the Science Capacity Team, will play a key role in disseminating and socializing best practices related to geospatial data to TNC science staff globally through close collaboration with the Conservation & Geospatial Systems Team in IT. With this important collaboration and our global conservation science community, this position will contribute to TNC’s strategic priorities by organizing, securing, and disseminating data to help achieve TNC’s 2030 goals. The responsibilities of the role include:

  *   Acquiring, managing, and synthesizing spatial data to support real-world conservation decisions.
  *   Packaging complex data into products effectively communicating information to diverse and global audiences.
  *   Collaborating with IT on modernizing spatial data infrastructure to optimize data flow and access.
  *   Promoting data integrity, accessibility, and usability by implementing quality control processes, data validation, and cleanup measures.
  *   Collaborating with IT geospatial data administrators, data scientists and GIS practitioners to determine organizational data needs and oversee the adoption of geospatial infrastructure and knowledge management systems that meet these requirements.
  *   Managing data retrieval processes and helping ensure that data are accessible to authorized personnel.
  *   Developing and implementing data management policies and procedures to ensure the integrity and privacy of data.
  *   Training data management staff and related roles in proper spatial data handling and processing.
  *   Coordinating with other departments to integrate spatial data across the organization and facilitate data-driven decision-making.
  *   Conducting complex data analyses to support decision-making and assisting with cartography, reports and data extraction when necessary.
  *   Responding to data-related queries and troubleshooting data issues.
  *   Advocating for the adoption of best practices and new technologies across TNC.
  *   Assisting practitioners and scientists to migrate GIS data and analytic workflows from local devices to the cloud.
  *   In conjunction with our global Geospatial Leadership Council, advance emerging data sharing platforms for internal collaboration and external partnership development.

WHAT YOU'LL BRING

  *   Bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, geographic information systems (GIS), geography, urban planning, or relevant field with direct application to environmental and/or conservation science.
  *   Proficiency in Microsoft Office products, Esri ArcGIS, and basic graphic design.
  *   Knowledge of both proprietary and open-source spatial data standards and technologies.
  *   Experience with spatial data acquisition, storage, administration, and management functions (collection, analysis, metadata, distribution, etc.).
  *   Knowledge of geospatial data interoperability across diverse platforms and systems.
  *   Experience analyzing and integrating multiple data types.
  *   Experience working with cloud-based data storage, access, and database capabilities.
  *   Understanding of data security principles, especially when handling sensitive geospatial information.
  *   Experience managing and implementing multiple projects and working with cross-functional teams, including spatial data scientists, ecologists, environmental social scientists, and non-scientists.
  *   Strong soft skills, including organizational and problem-solving skills and strong communication and teamwork.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  *   Master’s or advanced degree in a related field.
  *   Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in spatial data management-related positions.
  *   Experience working in international settings or with multinational teams to successfully implement global data projects.
  *   Working knowledge of current trends and practices in spatial analysis tools and methods.
  *   Experience with other GIS software, such as QGIS, R, or other relevant tools, to manipulate and analyze spatial data.
  *   Familiarity with cloud-native geospatial technologies.
  *   Programming knowledge in Python, Google Earth Engine (GEE) and/or R to automate spatial data processing.
  *   Skills in project management to plan and execute geospatial data projects.
  *   Effective communication skills to convey geospatial information and insights to technical and non-technical stakeholders; and,
  *   Experience working in any field of environmental or conservation science and collaborating with interdisciplinary teams to address spatial aspects of social and economic challenges.

SALARY INFORMATION

This position may be based in any country where TNC has an established entity, taking into consideration legal restrictions, such as non-national ratios and immigration processing times. For U.S. based applicants only, the starting pay range for this position is generally within the range of $76,800 - $95,450 for annual base salary and is based on location, qualifications, specific skills, and experience. This range only applies to candidates whose country of employment is the USA. For all other applicants, pay ranges will be in local currency, the pay range will be based on the local labor market, and not tied to the above pay range. Your geographic location will be confirmed during the recruitment and used to determine your actual pay range. Additionally, for all applicants, actual pay will fall within a range based on a variety of factors including, for example, the candidate’s qualifications, specific skills, and experience.
