Senior Research Associates in the Atmospheric Impacts of a Future Hydrogen Economy (2 posts)

Lancaster Environment Centre
Lancaster University, UK

We seek to appoint two Senior Postdoctoral Research Associates at the Lancaster Environment Centre to quantify the current and future atmospheric budgets of hydrogen in contribution to the Horizon Europe-funded HYDRA project. The HYDRA project addresses the atmospheric, climate and environmental impacts of a future hydrogen economy and is a collaboration between partners in Italy, Spain, Greece, Belgium and the UK. The project will generate new scenarios for hydrogen production, consumption and leakage, and these positions will contribute by advancing our understanding of the impacts on the atmosphere through the development and application of global atmospheric models.

Position 1 (Tropospheric) will focus on quantifying the current and future hydrogen budget in the troposphere, and on improving understanding of the highly uncertain microbial soil sink, which dominates removal of hydrogen from the atmosphere.

Position 2 (Stratospheric) will focus on quantifying the corresponding impacts on stratospheric composition and on ozone hole recovery and will explore the broader climate impacts of future hydrogen scenarios.

Applicants should have (or be about to complete) a Ph.D. in atmospheric science, meteorology or a related quantitative discipline. You should have experience in developing and running numerical models, and in data analysis. Experience with global atmospheric models, atmospheric chemistry schemes, and model evaluation against observational datasets would be an advantage. You should be able to demonstrate independence, good communication skills and a willingness to work effectively in a multidisciplinary international environment. You will have the opportunity to present results at national and international meetings and to write up results for publication in leading scientific journals.

These are full-time posts for 24 months to start on November 1, 2024, or at a mutually agreed date close to this. For further details and to apply, please visit https://hr-jobs.lancs.ac.uk/Vacancy.aspx?ref=0913-24. Applicants should include a brief cover letter stating which of the positions they are interested in applying for. The deadline for applications is Monday September 16, 2024.

Informal enquiries should be directed to Prof. Oliver Wild (o.wild at lancaster.ac.uk) or Prof. Ryan Hossaini. Further details on the HYDRA project are available at the HYDRA website<https://www.hydraproject.eu/>, and information on the atmospheric science group at Lancaster is available at https://lec-atmos.org/.

Best regards,

Oliver
