I am looking for a PhD student to work on the dynamics of subduction in
Fram Strait. See the details at the link below and at
https://jobs.awi.de/Vacancies/1752/Description/2
The application deadline is August 30th 2024. Feel free to contact me about
it. I would also really appreciate it if you could forward this to
potential applicants.

PhD position in "Dynamics of Subduction in Fram Strait" (m/f/d)
*Background*
Located between Greenland and Svalbard, Fram Strait is the only deep
oceanic gateway to the Arctic Ocean. There, warm and salty Atlantic water
moves vertically below cold, fresh water from the Arctic Ocean. This
subduction is likely controlled by small-scale oceanic dynamics with
implications for the physics and biology/biogeochemistry in the region and
beyond, up to the global scale. The goal of this PhD project is to
determine the dynamics of subduction in order to make predictions
concerning its future evolution. To do so, three types of data will be
analysed: Lagrangian trajectories from an existing eddy-resolving regional
numerical model, high-resolution towed sections across Fram Strait to be
collected in July 2024 and February 2025, and existing long-term mooring
data from throughout the eastern Fram Strait.

*Tasks*

   - Conducting research to achieve the project’s goals
   - Participating in (a) research cruise(s) and data acquisition at sea
   - Processing, documenting, and analysing oceanographic data
   - Collaborating with project partners to integrate physical and
   biogeochemical data
   - Publishing the research results

*Requirements*

   - Master’s degree or equivalent in physical oceanography, climate
physics, or a related discipline (If the degree has not been awarded yet,
please provide a letter from your supervisor stating when the degree will
   be awarded)
   - Strong background in physics, especially (geophysical) fluid dynamics
   - Strong programming skills in e.g. Matlab or Python
   - Experience with (ship-based) fieldwork and analysis of simulated or
   multi-sensor-derived datasets is advantageous
   - Background in biogeochemistry or biological oceanography is
   advantageous
   - Good communication skills in English, both oral and written

*Further Information*
For any questions you may have, you are very welcome to get in touch with *Dr
Wilken-Jon von Appen* (+49-471-4831-2903; Wilken-Jon.von.Appen at awi.de).

*Bremerhaven.*
Please submit your application, including (1) a letter of motivation, (2) a
CV and copies of relevant certificates (master’s degree; training), (3) two
letters of recommendation or the contact information of two
references, by *30th August
2024. *Electronic applications only.
