Objective of the Role
Moody’s RMS has an open position in our HWind team based in Tallahassee, FL. The role involves researching and quality controlling tropical cyclone wind observations to analyze tropical cyclone wind fields accurately and objectively both in real time and post storm. It presents a unique opportunity to work in a multidisciplinary team of meteorologists and catastrophe modelers to deliver time-sensitive tropical cyclone data to our Re/Insurance clients.
Key Responsibilities:
The primary duty of this role is to contribute toward the maintenance and development of HWind products. This includes taking the lead within a team of Meteorological Analysts to deliver our HWind real-time Snapshot and Footprint products during active tropical cyclone events. Support for maintaining and updating tropical cyclone wind data collection and quality control procedures throughout the year will be required. As the leader of HWind real-time operations, the successful candidate will work closely with the London-based RMS Event Response and Tropical Cyclone teams and will have the opportunity to work with client-facing colleagues to communicate scientific concepts to clients.
Essential Requirements:
The ideal candidate’s qualities, skills and attributes follow:
* MSc or PhD in a relevant subject (e.g., Meteorology, Oceanography, or closely related areas).
* Experience in tropical meteorology, operational meteorology, tropical cyclones, or wind science.
* Demonstrated success in a leadership, mentoring, or teaching role.
* Capability to work in a fast-paced, high-stress operational setting.
* Experience working with various types of geophysical data in common formats such as netCDF and csv.
* Strong ability in modeling languages (e.g., Python, R), and modern systems of scientific repeatability and engineering scalability (e.g., GitHub).
* Strong user skill in a Linux/Unix environment.
* Ability to communicate analysis results and insights effectively both internally and with external business partners.
