Description
The School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences (SoMAS) at Stony Brook University invites applications for a tenure track faculty position in marine conservation ecology to begin as early as Fall 2024. SoMAS is a multidisciplinary and transdisciplinary environment, with opportunities for collaborations within the School to advance its research mission. We are particularly interested in candidates who have a strong potential to collaborate with other faculty and staff across disciplines within SoMAS, and who will establish and sustain a vigorous independent externally funded research program in the broad area of marine conservation ecology. Successful candidates are expected to teach and mentor students at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. The candidate will be expected to actively participate in the M.A. in Marine Conservation and Policy Masters of Arts Program and contribute to other departmental and university service, including contributions to promoting equity, inclusion, and diversity. All candidates must have a Ph.D. in ecology, conservation ecology, marine sciences or a closely related discipline and have demonstrated excellence in research and a strong commitment to teaching. The position will be filled at the Assistant Professor level. This is a tenure-track position, with an initial three-year, renewable appointment.

http://www.somas.stonybrook.edu/: The School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences (SoMAS) is the State University of New York's center for marine and atmospheric research, education, and public service. It is also the home of the university's Sustainability Studies Program. Approximately 800 graduate and undergraduate students currently work and study at SoMAS. The SoMAS Faculty are internationally known for their leadership in research in atmospheric sciences, in all the major disciplines of oceanography - biological, chemical, geological, and physical - and in sustainability studies.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications: Ph.D. (or foreign equivalent) in ecology, conservation ecology, marine science, or closely related discipline, in hand no later than August 31, 2024. Demonstrated excellence in research related to conservation ecology or closely related topics, and a compelling agenda for future research. Strong commitment to teaching.
Preferred Qualifications: Experience in teaching undergraduate or graduate courses in conservation ecology or closely related topics. Experience with course and curriculum development. Experience mentoring undergraduate and/or graduate students. Experience obtaining and managing external research funding. Experience and interest in working in multi-disciplinary or trans-disciplinary environments. Potential for collaboration within the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences and with others across the SBU campus to advance its research mission.
