Dear colleagues,

I am writing to advertise a PhD project on extreme temperatures at the University of St Andrews (in collaboration with Dr Nick Dunstone at the Met Office).

The project will involve theory, performing numerical simulations as well as analyses of state-of-the-art climate models. The position will be based at St Andrews' School of Earth and Environmental Sciences and the start date will be approximately September 2024. Project description here: https://iapetus2.ac.uk/studentships/heatwave-dynamics-on-decadal-timescales-mechanisms-and-predictability/

The PhD position is suitable for a student with an undergraduate/masters degree or equivalent in physics, mathematics, engineering, atmospheric science, computer science, or a related field. A strong background in mathematics and physics is more important than previous experience in climate science.

Please email me if you are interested in discussing this PhD project informally.

Best regards,

Mike Byrne
