We are seeking a talented Postdoctoral Research Fellow to join the Centre of Excellence for Climate Extremes <https://climateextremes.org.au/> at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia. The position resides in the School of Earth, Atmosphere and Environment, <https://www.monash.edu/science/schools/earth-atmosphere-environment> but the successful candidate will have the opportunity to bridge disciplines and collaborate closely with researchers in the Department of Econometrics and Business Statistics <https://www.monash.edu/business/econometrics-and-business-statistics> and other researchers within the Weather & Climate Interactions <https://climateextremes.org.au/12962-2/> group within the Centre.

The Research Fellow will work with Dr Martin Singh (School of EAE) and Dr Kate Saunders (Department of Econometrics and Business Statistics) to better understand the spatial characteristics of precipitation extremes over Australia. Heavy rainfall occurring at local scales is associated with different impacts and risks compared to extreme rainfall that occurs over a wider region. The successful applicant will use observational data to characterise the spatial scales of precipitation extremes over Australia using a variety of statistical approaches and to relate these extremes to properties of the large-scale meteorological environment. These relationships will then be used to improve statistical and physical models of extreme precipitation.

We seek applicants from a diverse range of fields including experts in climate dynamics, meteorology, applied statistics or related fields. The project has significant scope to be shaped by the interests and skills of the applicant. The successful applicant will be expected to conduct research of the highest international quality, publish the results in world-leading journals and present them at major national and international conferences.

Diversity is one of our greatest strengths at Monash. We encourage applications from First Nations people, culturally and linguistically diverse people, people with disabilities, neurodiverse people, and people of all genders, sexualities and age groups.

Applications will be accepted until Wednesday 15th November 2023. For further enquiries, please contact Dr Martin Singh at martin.singh at monash.edu <mailto:martin.singh at monash.edu> or Dr Kate Saunders kate.saunders at monash.edu <mailto:kate.saunders at monash.edu>.
