Hi colleagues,
We are recruiting for summer undergraduate interns for 2024! We have a USDA research + extension experience for undergraduate grant that is supporting a group of interns in multiple locations across the north central states. Next summer, we will host one here, in my SDSU Extension office in Aberdeen, SD. The application deadline is December 8. The grant provides funding for 10 weeks of full time work plus a stipend for the summer. Please see the details below in the email from my co-PI and the flyer that is attached that can be printed and posted in your halls or offices. Please share with colleagues or students you know who may be interested.
Thanks for helping to spread the word!

Hello water colleague,
I wanted to share an exciting opportunity for students that will take place in Summer 2024. Students can apply to participate in a regional watershed management research and outreach internship programs for undergraduates that will take place at seven universities across the upper Midwest. Applications are open now through December 8 at https://northcentralwater.org/watershed-management-research-and-outreach-internship-program/.
While the internships will range in location, topic, and format, they each will provide students with broader perspectives and experience in water-related research and extension education. Students will gain real world experience with the complexities and trade-offs associated with water-related decisions in rural and urban landscapes.
Internships are paid and full time over the summer. Students will be paid $15/hour in addition to a stipend of roughly $3,420 for subsistence support. (Please note, compensation may vary slightly state by state and Illinois will be providing a higher hourly pay rate and will not be providing subsistence support.)
In addition to activities and products at their host institution in conjunction with their mentor, students will also be part of a virtual cohort that will work together across the region to address a regional watershed management issue. As part of the virtual cohort, students will also engage in skills training throughout the summer and attend and participate in an in-person student learning summit near the end of their internship.
Any degree seeking student at a US based college or university is eligible that has completed at least one year of higher education before starting the internship program, has at least one semester remaining, and is a US citizen or permanent resident (USDA policy).
This is a U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) funded Research and Extension Experiences for Undergraduates (REEU) project. The program is structured as collaborative research and extension groups to teach students how to conduct research and extension with their mentors' guidance. Students will learn to work independently and collaboratively. Up to five students from various water management-related disciplines will be recruited every year. Diversity and inclusion are central to our mission and pursuit of excellence. As EEO employers, our institutions provide equal opportunities in employment and programming, including Title VI, Title IX and ADA requirements. The team has taken steps to support an equitable application process, such as anonymizing applications before review.
Please feel free to reach out to me about general program questions or I can help you get in touch with the mentor that is in your state of interest if you have questions about state specific activities.
Sincere thanks for sharing with any students who might be interested in applying. I have included a .jpg that you can share in a classroom setting, post to a bulletin board, or forward to potentially interested students.
