DEPARTMENT: Center for Regenerative Agriculture & Resilient Systems (CRARS)
LOCATION: CSU Chico, CSU East Bay, or remote
MENTORS: Drs. John Knowles and Patty Oikawa
RECRUITMENT ID: 028
RESIDENCY: Candidate must establish California residency. Chico State Enterprises is not a sponsoring agency for staff and management positions (i.e., H-1B Visas).

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
We are excited to be hiring a full-time Postdoctoral Scholar to oversee and manage greenhouse gas measurements for the California Soil Carbon Accrual Project. The successful applicant will lead coordinated data analysis from eddy covariance towers in paired conventional and regenerative fields across three representative California growing regions (6-8 towers total). Primary responsibilities include data management, analysis, interpretation, and reporting of results in peer-reviewed journals, but not eddy covariance data collection or tower maintenance, which will be performed by project personnel.

In addition, the applicant will be expected to lead short-term field campaigns focused on collecting CO2, CH4 and N2O soil flux measurements from automated chambers in conventional and regenerative fields at the Chico University Farm (Sacramento Valley) location. These data will be integrated with eddy covariance data to determine soil carbon accrual and the climate mitigation potential of regenerative agriculture. The incumbent will be co-mentored and work directly with Dr. John Knowles at CSU Chico and Dr. Patty Oikawa at CSU East Bay. Other project co- investigators include Drs. Sandrine Matiasek (water quality), Garrett Liles (soil science), Logan Smith (soil microbiology), and Jake Brimlow (agricultural economics) at CSU Chico, with collaboration from the Modoc Nation, community and non-profit organizations, and industry. The successful candidate will have opportunities to mentor undergraduate and graduate students to conduct research and present at professional meetings and conferences.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS:
The successful candidate must possess the following:
• A Ph.D. degree in environmental science, atmospheric science, biogeochemistry, natural science, or related field
• Strong quantitative skills (including programming skills in R or Matlab)
• A proven record of scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals
• Time management skills and ability to follow through on projects to completion
• Self-motivation
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills
• Ability to get a valid California driver’s license

Desired (but not required) skills:
• Fieldwork experience
• Knowledge of micrometeorology and prior experience with eddy covariance data
• Knowledge of manual or automated static chamber greenhouse gas measurements
• Knowledge of regenerative agricultural techniques

BENEFITS:
Benefits for employees working 30 hours or more per week include employer paid life insurance ($50,000) and long-term disability; options for health, dental, and vision insurance; FSA; 14 paid holidays including 1 personal holiday; vacation accrual (initially 10 days/year); sick leave (up to 12 days/year); employer contributions to your 403(b) retirement plan (up to 8%).
