1 year VAP of Environmental Science at Goucher College, Baltimore, MD
The Environmental Studies Department at Goucher College invites applications for a one-year Visiting Assistant Professor, beginning in August 2023, focused on the scientific dimensions of environmental problems. The program at Goucher is interdisciplinary and we seek candidates who can help students foster their collaborative skills across disciplinary lines. We seek an enthusiastic, student-oriented colleague with demonstrated potential for excellence in undergraduate teaching. The ideal candidate will have completed coursework, as well as research that uses scientific approaches to address environmental problems. We are particularly interested in candidates who can deepen our students’ understanding of the interactions between humans and natural systems through active and experiential learning techniques in laboratory- and field-based environmental studies courses. Teaching responsibilities include an introductory environmental science lecture and laboratory course, applied statistics, an upper-level elective on a specific science-based topic, and a problem-based course that strengthens non-science students’ ability to understand and apply the Scientific Method. In addition, we seek a colleague who will mentor undergraduate students in their interdisciplinary capstone research projects. The teaching load is 24 credits (3/3).
Requirements:
Preference will be given to candidates (1) who have a Ph.D. in environmental science or closely related scientific discipline by the time of appointment, and (2) who have used active and experiential learning methods and pedagogical techniques within a diverse undergraduate population. ABD candidates who expect to defend by the end of 2023 will be considered.
Application Instruction:
Interested candidates should submit the following materials:
* A curriculum vitae
* A cover letter that contextualizes the candidate’s research and teaching interests
* A 1–2-page statement of teaching philosophy and any evidence of teaching effectiveness
* A 1–2-page statement on commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. This statement should demonstrate the candidate's ability to work across diverse groups and contribute to inclusivity in the campus community.
* Contact information for three references. Recommendation letters will be solicited if selected for an interview.
* Graduate transcripts (unofficial ones will be accepted at the time of application, but official transcripts must be provided at the time of hire.)
The review of applications will begin on June 12, 2023, and will continue until the position is filled.
