Overview

We are looking to hire a Faculty Specialist (support scientist) to work on the analysis of sea ice model and remote sensing datasets, to support newly funded NASA Cryospheric Sciences research.

About you

This role will particularly suit someone excited to build climate data science tools and looking to develop a more team-based approach for engaging with climate science. A software engineering background is more important than a deep understanding of climate science issues and first-author papers are not expected. Great prior experiences to have, but that are not essential: (i) writing and adapting Python code, (ii) contributing to open-source packages using version control, (iii) knowledge of climate data analysis tools (e.g., the Pangeo software stack), (iv) Bayesian/machine learning methods.

We are keen to help you grow in the role and will provide training and mentorship opportunities as needed. Our project team recognizes the benefits of contributions from a broad range of perspectives. We thus particularly welcome applications from historically underrepresented groups within our field. International applications are welcome as visa sponsorship is possible.

Position details

You will be hired through the University of Maryland’s Earth System Science Interdisciplinary Center (ESSIC). We are flexible in the type of position we can offer, but it will likely be at the rank of Faculty Specialist (no PhD requirement). Working remotely is permissible and highly appropriate for this role. We are also very open to a part-time hire.

Salary and benefits will largely depend on your experiences and qualifications as set by the ESSIC hiring committee. Initial hiring salary will likely be in the range $55-75k. The University of Maryland provides various additional benefits including retirement contributions (typically 7% of salary), comprehensive health/dental care, good vacation allowance, maternity/paternity leave and sick leave options.

The position has funding for three years (pending successful annual reviews), while opportunities to extend your stay and/or work on additional projects will be encouraged as desired. Anticipated start-date is summer 2023 but this is flexible.

To apply

Applications are due by April 30, 2023. To apply please send a CV and 1-page cover letter to akpetty at umd.edu. References will be solicited from shortlisted candidates. For further information about the project or application process please email with any questions prior to the application deadline.
