Wide-Field Instrument Integration & Test Research Scientist for the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope

Applications are now being accepted for a Research Scientist position focusing on Wide-Field Instrument Integration & Test (I&T) at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) in Greenbelt, MD. The position consists of a research scientist appointment at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County's (UMBC) Center for Space Sciences and Technology (CSST<https://csst.umbc.edu/>), funded by NASA through the Center for Research and Exploration in Space Science and Technology II (CRESST II<https://cresst2.umd.edu/>).

Roman is a NASA astrophysics flagship mission expected to launch in late-2026 that will perform wide-area and time-domain surveys of the universe at visible and near-infrared wavelengths. The primary mission objectives are studies in cosmology and exoplanet demographics, but a wide range of astrophysical investigations are anticipated. Roman's primary instrument is the Wide-Field Instrument (WFI); a 300-megapixel visible to near-IR camera with an 0.28 deg2 field-of-view and both imaging and spectroscopic capabilities. WFI is currently in the I&T phase, with many subsystems complete and delivered to the instrument. Full WFI testing is expected to begin in the second half of 2023. WFI technical specifications <https://roman.gsfc.nasa.gov/science/WFI_technical.html> are available on the Roman website.

Now is the most exciting time to get involved with WFI. The successful applicant will work directly with the Roman Project Science team on the integration and test of the instrument. They will also collaborate with GSFC Roman engineers and mission partners at Ball Aerospace, the Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) Science Operations Center (SOC), and the Infrared Processing and Analysis Center (IPAC) Science Support Center (SSC). Primary responsibilities for WFI I&T support include one or more of the following activities: test planning, test shift support, pipeline and tool development, data analysis and trending, and calibration. The remainder of the applicant's time will be available for independent research projects.

Roman is managed and led by NASA's GSFC. Goddard is home to thousands of scientists and engineers that design, build, test, and operate cutting edge space observatories. The Roman Project Science team at GSFC is comprised of scientists with a broad set of scientific backgrounds and technical expertise. This includes experts in infrared detectors, optics, and observatory operations with science interests in cosmology, galaxies, stars, exoplanets, and high energy astrophysics. As a member of the Astrophysics Science Division, the successful applicant will be immersed in an enriching and inclusive environment with a diverse body of peers spanning senior scientists to undergraduate interns.

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in astronomy, physics, or a related field plus at least five years of independent research experience. Salary and benefits are competitive, commensurate with experience and qualifications. The position will be for 2 years, renewable upon mutual agreement and availability of funds.

The position will remain available until filled. Complete applications received by Monday, April 24, 2023, will receive full consideration. Candidates should provide a cover letter, Curriculum Vita including a publication list, a statement of research interests and technical experience, and contact information for three references via email to Ms. Katherine McKee (katherine.mckee at nasa.gov)<mailto:katherine.mckee at nasa.gov>.

Salary and benefits are competitive, commensurate with experience and qualifications. Vaccination is strongly recommended for UMBC students, faculty, and staff. For more information about the proposed research, contact Dr. Joshua Schlieder (joshua.e.schlieder at nasa.gov)<mailto:joshua.e.schlieder at nasa.gov>. For information on CRESST II or UMBC, Dr. Don Engel (donengel at umbc.edu)<mailto:donengel at umbc.edu>. UMBC is committed to inclusive excellence and innovation and strongly encourages applications from women, minorities, veterans, and individuals with disabilities. UMBC is an equal opportunity employer and welcomes all to apply. EOE/M/F/D/V.
