The Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey seeks a visionary geoscientist to lead our venerable organization as its next Director and State Geologist (https://wgnhs.wisc.edu/hiring-wgnhs-director-and-state-geologist/)!
The Wisconsin Geological and Natural History (WGNHS) is an interdisciplinary organization that conducts earth-science surveys, field studies, and research to produce scientific information used by government organizations, industries, businesses, tribes, and individuals throughout Wisconsin. Part of the University of Wisconsin–Madison, Division of Extension, WGNHS was created by the Wisconsin Legislature in 1897 and is the descendant of earlier state surveys in Wisconsin which date back to 1854.
The WGNHS Director and State Geologist provides overall leadership, administrative direction, vision, and oversight for the scholarship, applied research, and outreach activities carried out by WGNHS staff. Among this position’s responsibilities, the Director works to represent WGNHS to fulfill the organization’s mission, communicate the importance of its work to diverse audiences, and guide WGNHS research and publications. Success as the WGNHS Director and State Geologist requires dedication and demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion within the organization, and in all aspects of this role. This includes increasing representation from those typically underrepresented in the field of geosciences and expanding access to applied and culturally relevant research and outreach carried out by WGNHS staff. As WGNHS staff frequently collaborate with researchers at UW–Madison and other UW campuses, the Director and State Geologist will also be joining a vibrant research community. This is a full-time renewable position with an application deadline of April 25, 2023.
Much of the work that WGNHS undertakes is research that produces fundamental geologic and hydrogeologic information for the benefit of residents in Wisconsin. This includes:
Bedrock, hydrogeologic, and Quaternary mapping, such as these maps of the Quaternary geology of Jefferson County and the surficial and bedrock geology for two quadrangles in Grant County, both published in 2022.
A variety of geologic and hydrogeologic studies, such as this award-winning 2021 hydrogeologic report detailing the ways in which climate change will likely affect stream temperatures in a northern Wisconsin trout stream.
Long-term projects like the statewide Groundwater-Level Monitoring Network, producing and maintaining a variety of interactive data resources, data preservation, and myriad digital and in-person outreach efforts.
For those who wish to learn more about the types of work that WGNHS does, we have an interactive map of our current and recent projects (https://wgnhs.wisc.edu/research/projects/). Also, our annual overviews of WGNHS’s most noteworthy accomplishments, such as our Year in Review for 2021, 2020, and 2019, are well worth perusing.
WGNHS is based in the beautiful city of Madison, WI, a dynamic university town and the capital of the state of Wisconsin. Madison is consistently ranked as being one of the best cities in America for quality of life, and the University of Wisconsin–Madison campus as well as many other local institutions offer area residents a plethora of opportunities for cultural enrichment. While WGNHS is part of UW–Madison, our Madison office is located on the city’s near west side a short distance from the university campus, offering our employees easy parking and public transit access while still being in close proximity to all that the campus has to offer. We also have our geologic repository in Mount Horeb, WI, which houses our extensive collections of rock core, well cuttings, and hand samples, and provides space for educational programs.
