What We Can Achieve Together:
The Director of Conservation Programs provides leadership, technical and program support to the New Mexico business unit's conservation operations.  They serve as the principal contact to government agencies, other conservation organizations, and the academic community.  They establish the Conservancy as a major conservation leader and/or partner on relevant and significant conservation issues, including but not limited to land and freshwater protection and restoration, forest health, climate change, supporting indigenous-led conservation, applied conservation science and land management. The Director is responsible for ensuring that the New Mexico business unit is aligned with, and contributing to, TNC's global, North American, and Western Division conservation priorities.  The Director works to ensure that there is equity in our conservation strategies and practices. The Director disseminates best practices and provides training and analyses to best implement organizational strategies and measures of success.

Over the course of almost 50 years of working in New Mexico, The Nature Conservancy has demonstrated that we can play a unique and critical role in shaping and implementing large-scale solutions to conserve the lands and water of the Land of Enchantment. In New Mexico we have protected more than 1.4 million acres of land. We have established ourselves as valued and credible partners and have developed strong skills in leveraging resources to achieve large-scale conservation outcomes. Moving forward we will continue to build on this legacy of conservation success and are looking for someone to take these successes to the next level. We recognize that for us to succeed in the rapidly changing ecological, social, political and climatic contexts, it will be crucial for us to develop new tools and skills, expand our focus on equity in conservation, and garner more resources to advance our projects and programs. This is an exceptional career opportunity for a highly motivated, capable individual interested in joining our amazing team based in beautiful Santa Fe, NM.
What You'll Bring:

  *   BA/BS degree and 10 years' experience in conservation practice or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  *   Fundraising experience, including identifying donor prospects and donor cultivation.
  *   Experience directing a major program or project of strategic importance, including management/supervision of multi-disciplinary teams and meeting deadlines.
  *   Experience working with current trends and practices in relevant discipline(s) and geographic regions.
  *   Supervisory experience, including motivating, leading, setting objectives, and managing performance.
  *   Experience in partnership development with non-profit partners, community groups and/or   government agencies.
  *   Experience negotiating
  *   Experience influencing, developing, and implementing conservation policy and plans at the state or country level.
  *   Experience with financial management of a large program.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  *   Multi-lingual and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
  *   10-12 years' experience in conservation practice or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  *   Developing practical applications of scientific concepts and technical innovations for conservation purposes.
  *   Knowledge of methods and standards of biodiversity information systems and initiatives and experience conceiving and implementing strategic initiatives.
  *   Communicating clearly via written, spoken, and graphical means in English and other relevant languages.
  *   Politically savvy.
