The UCLA’s department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences (https://www.atmos.ucla.edu/) seeks a postdoctoral scholar to support modeling activities of ASIA-AQ, a NASA field program to improve understanding of the factors controlling local air quality across Asia through multi-perspective observations and modeling. Anticipated duties include leading the development, testing, deployment of a prediction system that performs data assimilation and near-real time emission constraints time using satellite retrievals, coordinating multiple air quality forecasting systems provided by other institutions to support flight planning and perform post-campaign analysis, participating in the field deployment, and supervising graduate and undergraduate students. The postdoctoral scholar will also have the chance to perform research in other topics developed in Prof. Saide group such as research to advance modeling of wildfire smoke.

Desired qualifications include a Ph.D. in atmospheric science, physics, engineering, or a related field, strong quantitative and programming skills, experience on running air quality models and analyzing their output, knowledge on data assimilation and/or inverse modeling, and strong scientific writing skills. Requirements for this position include being able to participate in the ASIA-AQ deployment (currently planned to occur within January-March 2024) and being eligible to have unrestricted access to NASA’s high-performance computing systems. Currently, citizens from designated countries (list in following link https://www.nasa.gov/sites/default/files/atoms/files/designated_country_list_6.10.2022.pdf ) have limited access to these systems.
