Open PhD Research Assistantship positions to Study the High Latitude Planetary Boundary Layer (PBL) Experimental and Modeling.

The PBL Research Group at the Department of Atmospheric Sciences College of Natural Science and Mathematics. University of Alaska Fairbanks has two RA openings starting Fall 2023. We are seeking two motivated students to perform experimental and modeling research in high latitude PBLs. We are interested in advancing dynamic, radiative, turbulent and meteorological processes aiming to the formation of surface based temperature inversion layers and their radiative and dynamic interaction with the small scale flows and synoptic systems.

Students applying to this program will be incorporated in the UAF - Earth Systems Sciences PhD program with concentration in Atmospheric and Climate Sciences.

Applicants should have a strong background in meteorology with good level in mathematics (signal analysis using multiresolution spectral analysis desired) and atmospheric physics, experience interacting with research groups, and publishing peer review papers (desired). Selected students will be trained to perform winter experiments in Alaska. Experimental experience in the following instruments is an advantage: Laser Scintillometers, Sonic Anemometer/ux towers, Microwave Radiometer and Lidars. Students will perform modeling analysis in collaboration with NCAR Microscale, Mesoscale and Meteorology Lab. and LATMOS modeling teams in Sorbonne University in France for Air Pollution Meteorology.
