Post-doctoral fellowship opportunity in modeling and observation of the
atmospheric boundary layer
The NRL Marine Meteorology Division (MMD) is seeking a post-doc to join an
exciting new study investigating vertical turbulent transport through
eddy-diffusion mass flux (EDMF) closure schemes in the atmospheric boundary
layer. The study will use novel observations of boundary-layer eddy
structure and height, shallow cloud, aerosol distribution, vertical velocity
and more collected from instruments continuously operating at a new NRL
coastal observing site to validate EDMF scheme quantities. The post-doc will
work with both numerical model and observation data, and will have the
opportunity to collect fields at the observing site. The successful
candidate will also work directly with a small team of NRL scientists with
expertise in aerosol modeling, in-situ and remote sensing measurements of
the atmosphere, atmospheric boundary layer modeling and numerical weather
prediction, and also collaborate with leading scientists outside NRL.
Candidates should have experience working with numerical models of the
atmosphere. Experience with WRF is a plus but not necessary. Model
development work will involve use of FORTRAN. Experience with at least one
language/platform for building codes for data analysis will be needed: e.g.,
Python, MATLAB, GrADS. Candidates should have a doctorate focusing in the
atmospheric sciences, earth sciences or a related field. Scientific
background in at least one of these areas is highly desirable:
boundary-layer meteorology, aerosol transport, atmospheric turbulence.
The position is open starting in the fall of 2023 or early 2024 at the NRL
MMD in Monterey, California, USA
(https://www.nrl.navy.mil/marine-meteorology/); the starting date is
negotiable. Applicants must be U.S. citizens. NRL has access to excellent
High Performance Computing resources. Postdoctoral fellowships provide a
competitive stipend, relocation, and travel support. Our postdoctoral
fellowships are offered for a period of one year and are renewable for up to
an additional two years. They are administered by either the National
Research Council (NRC: https://www.nrl.navy.mil/careers/post‐doc/nrc/) or
the American Association for Engineering Education (ASEE:
https://www.nrl.navy.mil/careers/post‐doc/asee/). Applications through ASEE
are accepted at any time. The NRC deadlines are quarterly, with the next
deadline on 01 November 2023. Please contact Dr. David Flagg
(david.flagg at nrlmry.navy.mil <mailto:david.flagg at nrlmry.navy.mil> ) to
learn more about this opportunity.
