The Science Education Resource Center (SERC) at Carleton College seeks to hire a Science Education Associate. The Science Education Associate advances SERC work in enhancing the quality and equity of STEM teaching and learning by pursuing funding opportunities, conducting and collaborating on externally funded education projects, and disseminating their results to a broad community. This person will work as a self-directed member of SERC staff with priorities determined by the SERC leadership team and project principal investigators of partner projects at Carleton and across multiple other institutions.

Essential Job Functions

The Science Education Associate works closely with SERC staff and other collaborators to design and conduct projects which support evidence-based science teaching and learning and institutional change designed to increase access and effectiveness in STEM education.

Specific responsibilities include

  *   Designing, conducting, collaborating on, and/or consulting with projects and organizations that support effective and culturally-responsive practices in science education and institutional change.
  *   Taking responsibility for management of new and ongoing projects, working within the fiscal and time constraints necessitated by grant funded projects and ensuring project work moves forward on time and budget.
  *   Developing ideas, building partnerships and authoring grant proposals for new projects to support their own work and that of the larger SERC team.
  *   Collaborating with project evaluators and research teams in designing and conducting studies of program processes and outcomes.
  *   Convening or supporting professional development events, overseeing all aspects of SERC's contribution to the events and resulting websites and legacy content.
  *   Authoring or co-authoring journal articles, conference presentations, videos, or website resources on project results.
  *   Representing the organization to external agencies and groups, including attending regional, national, and international conferences and meetings to maintain SERC's visibility
  *   Work will require overnight travel to workshops and professional meetings.

Other duties, as assigned, may include

  *   Conducting independent scholarly research and quantitative data analysis.
  *   Supervising Content Specialist work on projects in the SEA's portfolio ensuring tasks are completed on time and within budget for the projects.
  *   Organize and direct office-wide committees and/or lead staff meetings to support the ongoing work and learning of the organization.

Supervision Received and Exercised

The Science Education Associate works as a self-directed member of the SERC staff and reports to the SERC Associate Director. Overall priorities and assignments are developed by the SERC leadership team and project Principal investigators.

Education/Experience/Skills
Required

  *   A PhD in geoscience or closely related field is required or a PhD in education with significant experience in geoscience or a closely related field, or a MS in geoscience or a closely related field and 5 years demonstrated experience with project management, geoscience education research or discipline based education research and grant writing.
  *   Experience with project management, working within deadlines and budgets, particularly externally funded projects.
  *   Ability to interact with, respect, and communicate with a diverse group of collaborators while managing projects and guiding the work of individuals and groups equitably.
  *   Understanding of and experience with evidence-based educational practices.
  *   Demonstrated ability to clearly communicate complex information both verbally and in writing.
  *   Willingness to quickly learn SERC's content management system and project and fiscal management tools with coaching and support from the SERC team.
  *   Willingness to make multiple, overnight trips per year to support workshops, make presentations, and assist in evaluation activities. Travel will follow Carleton College health and safety policies.

Preferred

  *   Experience working in higher education, and knowledge of effective practices and challenges in higher education.
  *   Demonstrated ability to confidently interact with college and university faculty, scientists and other professionals while managing projects.
  *   Strong, demonstrable, connections to geoscience and geoscience education individuals and communities
  *   Experience designing or facilitating faculty professional development activities.
  *   Interest in and experience with project-scale collaboration.
  *   Demonstrated ability to effectively manage, author and develop website content.
  *   Experience designing and conducting studies involving quantitative and qualitative data.

This is an exempt level position. The selected finalist's salary will be based on the candidate's qualifications, internal pay structure, and our overall compensation package.
