[ES_JOBS_NET] MSc Opportunity in Ocean Oxygen Sensors at University of Victoria

We are seeking a motivated MSc student to study dissolvedf the Ocean Gases Lab. This position is based at the School of Earth and Ocean Sciences, University of Victoria in beautiful Victoria, BC, Canada. Nearly 4000 Argo floats are currently observing the global ocean (https://argo.ucsd.edu <https://argo.ucsd.edu/>) with nearly 500 of them carrying dissolved oxygen sensors. Much of this sensor data comes from optodes, an optical oxygen sensor that measures the quenching timescale of a fluorescence. Although more stable than many other sensor styles, optodes require careful calibration. Optodes have the unique ability to measure oxygen in both air and water. However, splash from waves and sunlight exposure may complicate these in-air measurements. In this MSc project, the student will conduct laboratory experiments on optodes to reproduce the effect of waves splashing the sensor during measurements at sea and direct sunlight exposure. The student will also compare observations from existing floats in several regions to coincident sea state and sun angle indicators.

Prospective students should be bright and self-motivated with good communication skills.  We are looking for a student with the ability to think logically, to work independently, and to perform detailed computational analyses. Experience with chemical analyses, electronic instrumentation, and scientific analysis software such as Python or MATLAB are all assets in this position.
