Prescribed Fire Module Leader, The Nature Conservancy and Audubon Canyon Ranch
Based in Petaluma, California
Salary Range-between $65,000 and $70,000 annually

The Nature Conservancy's North America Fire program<https://nature.org/whyfire> and Audubon Canyon Ranch<https://www.egret.org/> are working together to support prescribed fire teams and projects in Sonoma and Marin Counties, across California, and nationwide. The person hired will be an employee of The Nature Conservancy, based at Audubon Canyon Ranch's Fire Forward program facilities, and will work alongside Audubon Canyon Ranch personnel based in Petaluma, California. The Prescribed Fire Module Leader will report directly to The Nature Conservancy's Director of Prescribed Fire Training with the North America Fire program and have a close working relationship with the Director of Fire Forward at Audubon Canyon Ranch. This position is expected to help both organizations achieve their prescribed fire goals.
The Prescribed Fire Module Leader will lead, train, and mentor individuals and crews on prescribed fire assignments. Based in Sonoma County and working closely through a partnership with Audubon Canyon Ranch's Fire Forward Program, this position will work independently and in teams, lead others, and follow directions from supervisors, teach courses, and mentor others while also attending courses and advancing their own certifications and qualifications. The Module Leader will work with and lead crews which consist of permanent and short-term employees as well as volunteers, contractors, and partner agencies.
Working in Sonoma and Marin Counties, California most of the year, the Module Leader will be expected to travel frequently on domestic and international prescribed fire assignments. They will likely travel 90-120 days each year.
The Module Leader shall lead crews on prescribed burns, prepare fire lines, maintain equipment, monitor post-burn fire effects, and carry out other prescribed fire and vegetation management related tasks. The Module Leader will support prescribed fire operations and training opportunities for other non-profits, Indigenous peoples and tribes, local fire departments, and local, state, and federal agencies, with a focus on providing inclusive workforce development opportunities for underrepresented groups. In addition, they are responsible for safe and effective fire operations, and they will administer physical fitness testing, train and organize crews, manage volunteers, contribute to annual refresher training, and maintain documentation files for volunteer and crew member training and qualifications.
