Job Description

The Earth Science Early Career Research Program includes two components - the Earth Science Division (ESD) portion of the annual Future Investigators in NASA Earth and Space Science and Technology FINESST) and the triennial Early Career Research Investigator Program (formerly the New Investigator Program). These programs support the participation of graduate students and early career investigators in NASA's Earth Science program, and covers all scientific topics and elements of the Earth Science Division (ESD) programs, including research, applied sciences, technology, data systems, and flight. Within the implementation of these programs programs, there is also a strong focus on diversity, inclusion, equity, and accessibility. The Early Career Research program coordinates as needed with related workforce development programs in the Science Mission Directorate, other NASA organizations, and NASA's interagency and professional association partners.

Role/Responsibilities:
The successful candidate for this position will

  *   Support the NASA Earth Science Early Career Investigator program scientist in implementing the FINESST and ECRIP activities.
  *   Assist the NASA ECR program manager in strategic planning and program management activities
  *   Assist the ECR program manager to allocate proposals to the relevant program managers in the Earth Science Division for review and, as needed, to organize and run grants proposal review panels in support of the FINESST and ECR programs
  *   Prepare grants award documents, hold status review meetings, and run community workshops and sessions at professional conferences.
  *   Support NASA civil servants in attending relevant meetings inside and outside of the US government.

Requirements:

  *   Graduate degree in one or more areas of Earth System Sciences (e.g., atmospheric sciences, oceanography, cryospheric science, ecology, conservation biology, geology, geodesy, geography) and/or contributing academic disciplines (e.g., chemistry, physics, biology) with an interest in applying this knowledge to Earth system science.
  *   5 years of experience (including graduate-level work) in a scientific or technical field relevant to Earth System Science.
  *   Experience in the research enterprise as a research scientist, proposer, peer reviewer, communicator, etc.
  *   Interest and/or experience in the application of remote sensing, in situ measurements, environmental modeling, or related approaches frequently used by NASA it its implementation of Earth System Science.
  *   Interest and/or experience in making connections across the disciplinary areas of the Earth Science Division (ESD) research program as well as the areas of activities addressed by the different components of ESD (Research and Analysis, Applied Sciences, Technology, Data Systems, Flight).
  *   Interest and/or experience in workforce development and/or human capital development activities.
  *   Interest and/or experience in making connections among government, academia, private sector, and non-profit entities in helping them achieve their collective goals.
  *   Interest and/or experience in diversity, equity, inclusion, accessibility, and environmental justice
  *   Able to be part of a diverse and inclusive team and in working constructively in a complex and fast-paced organization.
  *   Effective communications skills; experience providing presentations to broad audiences is an asset.
  *   Effective time management and organizational skills.
  *   Ability to multi-task and manage competing responsibilities.

Additional Requirements:

  *   Must be a US citizen or permanent resident with the ability to pass a Government background investigation for admission to a federal facility.
  *   It is expected that the position will be located at NASA HQ in Washington, DC with some telework flexibility. Other remote locations may be considered.
