ESF is a specialized PhD-granting college within the 64-campus SUNY system
and is a Carnegie R2 "High Research Activity" Institution that consistently
earns high rankings in US News and World Report, Forbes, Princeton Review,
and other national college guidebooks. SUNY-ESF is dedicated to solving
environmental problems through research, teaching, and service. With a
total enrollment of 1,700 undergraduates and 600 graduate students,
SUNY-ESF provides an intimate small-college atmosphere with a low
student/faculty ratio that allows for personal attention and assistance for
students. ESF is one of nine Ph.D. granting institutions within the SUNY
system. Integration of research and teaching is emphasized, and the college
has a strong undergraduate research program where undergraduate students
regularly work with graduate students and faculty. ESF has nine regional
campuses/field stations and maintains nearly 25,000 acres of forest
properties offering excellent opportunities for field-based research.
Access to chemical instrumentation (http://www.esf.edu/ats/ ) on the campus
is excellent. The ESF campus is adjacent to Syracuse University and close
to SUNY Upstate Medical University. The Syracuse Veterans Administration
Hospital, Upstate Medical University Hospital, Crouse Hospital and Upstate
Golisano Children's Hospital are within walking distance from ESF and offer
extensive research and collaborative opportunities for health-related
projects. The University Hill community provides students and faculty with
the resources of large institutions of higher education, including a wide
array of courses, computer and library facilities, and sports and health
services.

ESF has an especially strong focus in aquatic environmental sciences, with
more than 50 faculty members on campus focused on environmental problems
involving water. In the past decade ESF has made major investments in new
laboratories e.g. the Center for Integrated Teaching and Research in
Aquatic Sciences, the Forest Soils laboratory, and the mass spectrometry
complex in A&TS which include two new Orbitrap mass spectrometers and
several high sensitivity LC-MS/MS systems, as well as an 800 MHz NMR. These
facilities bring outstanding capabilities to ESF, allowing for the
recruitment of highly qualified new faculty members. Existing faculty
members in Chemical Engineering and Environmental Resources Engineering are
working on new technologies for remediation of water quality problems
including harmful algal blooms and PFAS contamination. The Clarkson-ESF
Center of Excellence in Healthy Waters located on campus will help
interface those efforts with private enterprise.

Located on the eastern edge of the Finger Lakes region, Syracuse is a small
city in a rural region offering a diversity of natural and cultural
amenities, a low cost of living, and a high quality of life, ranking among
the top 10 percent of "Best Places to Live" in "The Places Rated Almanac."
