Applications are invited for two postdoctoral scholar positions as part of a multi-campus UCOP<https://www.ucop.edu/research-grants-program/> grant focused on increasing publicly available tools for climate-smart seed sourcing and reforestation.


Modeling Climate Impacts on Conifer Reproduction

A 2+ year position will be located in the Moran Lab<https://sites.google.com/site/moranplantlab/> at UC Merced, and is focused on projecting climate impacts on tree reproduction to better understand forest dynamics and aid in seed banking efforts. This project makes use of the Mast Inference and Forecasting (Mastif) model<https://sites.nicholas.duke.edu/clarklab/r-packages/disperse/> and the associated global network of forest monitoring plots<https://sites.nicholas.duke.edu/clarklab/projects/mastif-network/>. Assisted Gene Flow and Reforestation Decision Support

A 2+ year position will be located at the California Climate Hub<https://www.climatehubs.usda.gov/hubs/california> at UC Davis<https://www.ucdavis.edu/>. This project leverages data<https://reforestationtools.org/docs/cast/presentations/LAMRC_open_house_poster_May2023.pdf> from hundreds of thousands of trees planted in common gardens across western North America to develop approaches for selecting diversified<https://stewartecology.org/diversified-seed-source-portfolios-and-uncertainty-in-reforestion-outcomes/> and climate-adapted<https://reforestationtools.org/climate-adapted-seed-tool/> portfolios of native seed sources for reforestation. The simple intervention of planting more climate-adapted genetic varieties can yield immense benefits to forest recovery, carbon sequestration, timber production, and fire resistance.
