Postdoctoral positions in Climate Risk Assessment and Management
Rutgers Earth System Science & Policy Lab

The Rutgers University Department of Earth & Planetary Sciences seeks applications for two postdoctoral associate positions, starting Fall 2023, with interests in climate risk assessment and management.

The candidates will join the Rutgers University Earth System Science & Policy Lab (earthscipol.net)<https://earthscipol.net/>, under the direction of Professor Robert Kopp, and its collaborators in the Megalopolitan Coastal Transformation Hub (MACH),<http://coastalhub.org/> NASA Sea Level Change Team<https://sealevel.nasa.gov/>, and Climate Impact Lab<https://www.impactlab.org/>.

We are seeking candidates with strong background in climate change from a natural science, social science, economic or decision analysis perspective, who desire to expand their experience in a transdisciplinary research environment. Strong grasp of statistics, strong coding skills (including experience in Python), and excellent organizational and communication skills are required.

Specific positions are described below. Contact Prof. Robert Kopp at Robert.Kopp at rutgers.edu<mailto:Robert.Kopp at rutgers.edu> with inquiries and apply online at the links below.

I. Valuing the Sea-Level Adaptation Benefits of Earth Observations

The incumbent in this position, which involves close collaboration with the NASA Sea-Level Change Team and the Climate Impact Lab, will work to integrate decision-making under uncertainty into the Climate Impact Lab’s model of sea-level rise economics (DSCIM-Coastal). They will apply this model to value reductions in sea-level projection uncertainty associated with prospective Earth observation missions and improvements in climate modeling. The results are expected to inform the next NASA Earth Science decadal survey. Background in climate economics and/or quantitative analysis of climate policy is particularly desirable. II. Integrated Climate Risk Management in Urban Coasts

The incumbent in this position, which involves close collaboration with partners throughout MACH, will develop and apply integrated coupled natural-human system models to characterize adaptation challenges and support climate adaptation decision making, as well as work with climate engagement professionals to ensure stakeholder concerns and decision-maker needs are reflected in model development.
