GESTAR II Task 173

-----------------

*Scientific Programmer/Analyst*

The Goddard Earth Sciences Technology and Research II
<https://gestar2.umbc.edu/> (GESTAR II) consortium at NASA’s Goddard Space
Flight Center (GSFC) invites applications for a research scientist position
in the field of atmospheric sciences, earth sciences, or remote sensing.

The incoming programmer/analyst will work with the Biospheric Sciences
Laboratory <https://science.gsfc.nasa.gov/earth/biosphere/> (Code 618) at
GSFC.The Biospheric Sciences Laboratory studies terrestrial ecosystems and
their interactions with the atmosphere using multiscale remote sensing,
mathematical modeling, and advanced analytical techniques. This research
allows Laboratory scientists to characterize and predict environmental
changes due to natural and anthropogenic processes at local to global scale.

Requirements:

· Bachelor’s degree in computer science or a scientific or engineering
discipline.

· Strong foundation in programming gained in project or laboratory work.

· Proficiency in an interpreted, open-source language such as Python.

· Intermediate proficiency in JS and HTML coding.

· Intermediate proficiency in web site development including both static
and dynamic interaction.

· Experience of working with large satellite datasets

· Intermediate proficiency in design, execution, and maintenance of
databases.

· Independently work through technical issues using problem-solving skills.

· Ability to communicate effectively in writing.

· Capable of working both independently and collaboratively.

The successful candidate will interface with project PI and scientists,
laboratory personnel, and science team members to develop database and
scientific software and solve challenges in a hybrid operational and
research scientific environment. The scientific computing environment is
increasingly heterogeneous, so the candidate can expect to work in NASA
cloud- and super-computing environments and on traditional Linux clusters.
Tasks include developing and maintaining online platforms, websites,
database systems, web applications for distributing and visualizing
datasets from multiple sources and interacting with external partner data
systems.

Duties and Responsibilities:

· Develop and maintain websites, data distribution, and visualization.

· Develop new formats, API for data access and distribution.

· Integrate datasets from various sources including surface, satellite,
and model outputs.

· Detect and correct errors found when building codes written in compiled
languages.

· Prototype, test, and debug programs as per requirements.

· Transition programs from research to production environments.

· Manage cloud environment, cloud services and work with stakeholders.

· Understand and maintain programs written by other programmers.

· Innovate and independently find and solve problems.

· Document program development, modification, and usage.

· Work independently in a dynamic, highly team-oriented environment.

Desired Skills and Qualities:

· Experience in programming in a scientific environment.

· Appreciation of diversity in requirements of research and operational
scientific software.

· Experience working with scientific data in formats such HDF5 and netCDF.

· Experience with cloud environments such as AWS.

· Knowledge of interpreting geospatial databases for various applications.

· Experience in data analysis and visualization for the Earth or physical
sciences.

The successful candidate will join the GESTAR II Consortium which supports
over 150 researchers based primarily at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center
(GSFC). GESTAR II personnel work to create extensive opportunities for
breakthroughs in earth and atmospheric science research, carrying out
observational, experimental and theoretical research in support of NASA
strategic Earth Science mission objectives.

Goddard’s Earth Science Division is home to about 200 civil servants and
over 1200 collaborating researchers and support personnel, dedicated to
studying the Earth as an integrated system that includes the atmosphere,
oceans, biosphere, cryosphere, and geosphere. The Division operates as a
component of the Sciences and Exploration Directorate that collaborate on
interdisciplinary research with the Astrophysics Science, Heliophysics
Science, and Solar System Exploration Divisions.

The nominal starting date is fall 2023, but alternate dates are possible
depending on availability. Candidates should provide a cover letter and a
full resume. Short-listed candidates will be asked to supply three names of
references. All materials and inquiries should be sent by email Subject
line: Task 173 Scientific Programmer/Analyst Position to: Halley Thompson (
halleyt at umbc.edu)

Completed applications received by September 10, will receive full
consideration, however the posting will remain open until the position is
filled.

Salary and benefits are competitive, commensurate with experience and
qualifications. The GESTAR II consortium and NASA GSFC are committed to
building a diverse research community and encourage applications from
women, racial and ethnic minorities, individuals with disabilities and
veterans. All GESTAR II institutions are Affirmative Action, Equal
Opportunity Employers
