The Geosciences Department at Williams College invites applications for a
2-year visiting assistant professor position in the broad fields of
oceanography, paleoclimate, low-temperature geochemistry, geographic
information systems and/or surface processes, beginning 1 July 2023.
Applicants with a preference for a 1.5-year appointment starting January 1,
2024 will also be considered.

We are a collegial, student-centered department of teacher-scholars,
actively engaged in research and dedicated to broadening participation in
the geosciences. Our department offers courses in modern and paleo-climate,
surface processes, geobiology, tectonics, and mineralogy/petrology. We seek
a colleague who is committed to inclusive undergraduate education in
classroom, lab, and field settings, and to engaging a diverse population of
students.

The successful candidate will teach one or two courses per semester,
depending on course size and structure. These would include upper-level
courses for geoscience majors and as well as courses aimed at a broader
audience, suitable for a liberal arts curriculum, with specific topics
based on the successful candidate’s interests and expertise as well as
departmental curricular needs. Our new colleague will have opportunities to
work with and mentor undergraduate research students; internal funds are
available to support student-faculty research.

The Geosciences Department (https://geosciences.williams.edu/) is committed
to providing excellent and inclusive geoscience education for all students,
including majors and those who take our classes as liberal arts electives.
Preferred applicants will have a Ph.D. or dissertation completed by the
time of appointment, demonstrated teaching experience, and experience
and/or demonstrated commitment to teaching, mentoring and advising a
diverse population of students.

The application should include 5 components: a cover letter; a 1-2 page
statement of teaching and mentoring philosophy incorporating specific
information on approaches to enhance diversity, equity, and inclusion and a
brief description of 2-3 courses the candidate would be interested in
teaching; a 1-2 page statement describing their area(s) of research
experience and/or geoscience expertise; a curriculum vitae; and contact
information for three references, who we will contact only for those
applicants who advance to the later stages of the search.

We welcome applications from members of groups historically
underrepresented and excluded in the geosciences. We encourage visiting faculty
to make use of the mentoring structures at Williams College, including
participation in college’s professional development program First3 for all
new faculty and support through the Rice Center for Teaching. All offers of
employment are contingent upon completion of a background check. Further
information is available here:
