Loper Professorship
Department of Geological Sciences, The University of Alabama

The Department of Geological Sciences at The University of Alabama (UA) invites applications for the endowed Loper Professorship. The position will be filled at the rank of Full or Associate Professor beginning August 16, 2023. We seek a colleague who will complement/enhance our existing research strengths, which include geochemistry, geophysics, hydrogeology, paleoclimate, paleontology, petrology, planetary science, sedimentology, stratigraphy, structural geology, tectonics, and volcanology. While applications from all areas of the geosciences are welcomed, highly productive researchers with expertise in critical minerals, hydroclimate modeling, geomicrobiology/biogeochemistry, or 'big data' geoscience applications are particularly encouraged to apply. The successful candidate will be expected to bring a vigorous, externally funded research program with national/international visibility to UA and to offer graduate courses within their discipline.
UA is a Carnegie R-1 public research university, with an enrollment of more than 38,000 students. Research collaboration and innovation at UA is fostered by the on-campus presence of the NOAA National Water Center (www.water.noaa.gov/about/nwc<http://www.water.noaa.gov/about/nwc>), the Geological Survey of Alabama (www.gsa.state.al.us<http://www.gsa.state.al.us>), the Alabama Water Institute (www.ovpred.ua.edu/alabama-water-institute<http://www.ovpred.ua.edu/alabama-water-institute>), the Cooperative Institute for Research to Operations in Hydrology (https://news.ua.edu/2022/04/ua-awarded-360-million-to-lead-national-water-effort/), and the planned state-of-the-art science and engineering USGS Hydrologic Instrumentation Facility (https://news.ua.edu/2022/01/ua-partners-with-usgs-to-build-hydrologic-instrumentation-facility/). Available research infrastructure includes the Alabama Supercomputing Authority (www.asc.edu/<http://www.asc.edu/>), the Alabama Analytical Research Center (aarc.ua.edu/<https://aarc.ua.edu/>) and the Dauphin Island Sea Lab (https://www.disl.org/about/location-facilities). Applicants can learn more about the UA Geological Sciences Department at www.geo.ua.edu<http://www.geo.ua.edu>.
Applications must be submitted through https://facultyjobs.ua.edu/ and should include: (1) a cover letter describing the candidate's qualifications and their commitment to fostering an inclusive university community, (2) a full curriculum vitae, (3) a research statement highlighting the candidate's accomplishments and future plans, (4) a teaching statement describing the candidate's teaching philosophy and methods, and (5) the names, affiliations, and email addresses of three referees who will provide confidential letters of recommendation.
Applications will be reviewed beginning January 2, 2023 but will be accepted until the position is filled. Questions about the endowed Loper Professorship position or the application process should be directed to Rona Donahoe (rdonahoe at ua.edu<mailto:rdonahoe at ua.edu>; 205-348-1879), search committee chair.
