*Description:*
The Center for Western Weather and Water Extremes (CW3E) is leading the
development and implementation of new research and applications
capabilities focused on extreme weather and climate events in the Western
US. CW3E is developing and implementing weather and climate observations,
numerical models, and decision support tools focused on atmospheric and
land-surface conditions related to extreme events and their impacts. CW3E
is an interface between UCSD departments, other universities around the
country, and local, state, and federal agencies, in the operation,
utilization, and expansion of new state-of-the-art weather observing
network deployed in California. Efforts to be undertaken by CW3E include
scientific research, technology development, numerical model development,
testing, and development/deployment of smart tools that aid decision-makers
affected by extreme weather, water, and climate events. CW3E is developing
methods and systems to aid future reservoir operations for flood control,
water supply, and ecosystems. CW3E is a focus of international research on
atmospheric rivers.
Under general supervision, perform technical duties requiring specialized
knowledge. Troubleshoot problems with hydrometeorological field equipment,
including data loggers, cell modems, and other communication devices, and
complex instrumentation. Conduct field calibrations. Deploy new equipment,
including preparing electronics and communications. Communicate to the team
regarding follow-up needs, and arrange these as needed. Ship equipment back
and forth between Scripps and field sites. Assist with data analysis and
communications with project partners and stakeholders. Provide timely and
detailed written communication with field team leaders regarding project
progress and obstacles. Participate and lead in outreach events.
QUALIFICATIONS

Graduation from high school or a GED and three (3) years of laboratory
experience or two (2) years of college, including courses in the natural,
physical or social sciences and two (2) years of laboratory experience, or
an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience using word processing and image editing software.

Experience with various computer programs, including Microsoft office.

Skills with routine laboratory/office needs (library research, quote
requests, organization, etc.).

Experience with hydrometeorological equipment, including surface
meteorology (barometers, anemometers, pyranometers, temperature and
relative humidity sensors, rain gauges, etc.), stream gauges, and soil
moisture sensors

Knowledge of and experience in general field research protocols.

Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Knowledge of field research safety requirements and procedures and
ability to maintain up-to-date safety training certification.

Excellent and effective written and oral communication skills. Ability
to communicate effectively with others in a constructive, professional, and
pleasant manner.

Strong attention to detail and demonstrated experience in having to be
meticulous in work performed.

Excellent organizational skills, including keeping clear and accurate
records, organizing a varied workload, and following written and oral
protocols effectively and with minimal instruction.

Ability to prioritize tasks and work independently. Demonstrated
problem-solving and critical thinking skills.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
- The job offer is contingent upon satisfactory clearance based on
Background Check results.
- Occasional evenings and weekends may be required. Overtime may be
required.
- Travel to field sites for a total of 2-3 months per year may be
required.
- Must be able to perform heavy physical labor and work under adverse
conditions.
- Must be able to use ladders, climb stairs, and be able to lift over 60
pounds.
- Must be willing to work with hazardous materials.
