Postdoctoral Associate: Statistical Tools for Modeling Paleo Sea Level
The Rutgers University Department of Earth & Planetary Sciences invites applications for a post postdoctoral associate with interests in spatiotemporal statistics, paleo sea level change, and paleoclimate. Starting Fall 2022 or Spring 2023, the candidate will join the Rutgers University Earth System Science & Policy Lab (earthscipol.net)<https://www.earthscipol.net/>, under the direction of Professor Robert Kopp, in close collaboration with the Research in Advanced DIstributed Cyberinfrastructure and Applications Laboratory<http://radical.rutgers.edu/> (radical.rutgers.edu), under the direction of Professor Shantenu Jha in the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering.
The candidate should have experience with spatiotemporal statistical modeling, and ideally to its application to paleo sea level or other paleo environmental data sets. Collaborating closely with the project’s software engineering lead, they will be responsible for day-to-day scientific direction of the National Science Foundation-funded PaleoSTeHM project. This project is developing a framework for spatio-temporal hierarchical modeling of paleo data that builds upon modern, scalable software infrastructure for machine learning. Its goal is to develop a framework that keeps pace with software engineering advances and makes these powerful modeling approaches broadly available to the paleo science community.
Principal responsibilities include: (1) engaging with international networks of paleo researchers to develop requirements for PaleoSTeHM, (2) using PaleoSTeHM to develop statistical models to reconstruct past global and regional changes in sea level, (3) training other paleo researchers in the use of PaleoSTeHM, and (4) writing papers describing this research.
The candidate requires:
* PhD in geology, oceanography, statistics, computer science, or a related discipline at time of appointment;
* Familiarity with the literature on spatiotemporal and/or Bayesian statistical methods;
* Strong coding skills, including experience in Python;
* Excellent organizational and communication skills.
Familiarity with Jupyter and high performance computing is a plus.
The position will be based at Rutgers-New Brunswick, with remote work possible. The position is a grant-funded annual position, with renewal for up to three years expected subject to performance.
