PhD Student in Environmental Engineering, Sustainability, and Science at
Carnegie Mellon
Position: A fully funded PhD student position is available in freshwater
resources and environmental geochemistry at Carnegie Mellon University in
the department of Civil & Environmental Engineering. The candidate will
work under the supervision of Dr. Sarah Fakhreddine. Research opportunities
focus on developing water management solutions that holistically address
issues of water quality and quantity. This includes studying how
climate-driven hydrological shifts and water management practices impact
water quality. Specifically, the candidate will investigate fundamental
geochemical and hydrological processes that control contaminant and
nutrient mobility in complex systems, such as highly developed watersheds,
agricultural lands, and managed aquifer recharge sites. Preference will be
given to candidates with previous research experience (lab, field, or
modeling) and strong background in geochemistry, environmental chemistry,
hydrology, or hydrogeology.
Timing: Ideal start date is Summer or Fall of 2023 with flexibility to
start earlier. Note that CMU CEE’s graduate application deadline is Dec.
15, 2022.
Interested applicants: Please reach out with any questions. Inquiries and
complete applications (including a CV, list of 3 references, and brief
letter describing your interests and fit for the position) should be sent
to Sarah Fakhreddine (sfakhred at andrew.cmu.edu).
