Hi all,
Please see the below advertisement for an open assistant professor position
at Penn State University in the Department of Meteorology and Atmospheric
Science and the Institutes for Energy and the Environment.
Cheers,
-Colin
*The Department of Meteorology and Atmospheric Science and the Institutes
for Energy and the Environment* at The Pennsylvania State University,
University Park, Pennsylvania, invite applications for a tenure-track
faculty position in climate prediction with a focus on solutions and
climate justice at the rank of *Assistant Professor*. We seek a faculty
member whose research would use a state-of-the-art understanding of the
earth and atmospheric sciences to advance the accuracy and precision of
climate predictions. The faculty member's research would be purposefully
designed to benefit vulnerable populations. Thus, while the faculty member
would pursue fundamental research to improve climate predictions, the work
would be guided by the needs of vulnerable populations. This hire would
fill a critical gap between our traditional disciplinary expertise in
atmospheric science and the overwhelming need for climate science designed
to help vulnerable populations adapt to climate change. This faculty member
would benefit from strong interdisciplinary links to colleagues working in
fields such as adaptation strategies, engineering, economics, urban
systems, decision science, ethics, geography, sociology, and political
science. This collaboration would be facilitated by the university-wide
Institute for Energy and the Environment (IEE), which is currently
promoting interdisciplinary initiatives including climate, water and
biogeochemistry, urban systems, and health and the environment, and the
College of Earth and Mineral Sciences' Earth and Environmental Systems
Institute (EESI).
We seek an inspired colleague who will develop a successful externally
funded interdisciplinary research program, be a committed and enthusiastic
teacher and mentor of undergraduate and graduate students, contribute to
enhancing department and college activities in diversity, equity, and
inclusion, and become an internationally recognized scholar who serves the
public and scientific communities. This position is part of a cluster hire
in climate solutions. The hire will be expected to collaborate across
departments and colleges. A Ph.D. in atmospheric science or a related
discipline is required by the time of appointment.
The Department of Meteorology and Atmospheric Science at Penn State relies
on the expertise, sensitivity, and commitment of an inclusive faculty to
enhance diversity, seek equity, and create a welcoming environment within
our community. We are committed to nurturing a learning and working
environment that respects differences in culture, age, gender, race,
ethnicity, physical ability, sexual orientation, and religious affiliation.
We strive to meet the needs of professional families by actively assisting
with the partner-placement needs of newly hired faculty members.
The Department is part of The Pennsylvania State University's College of
Earth and Mineral Sciences and together we take an active role in building
a talented, inclusive, and culturally competent workforce. We understand
that our shared future is guided by basic principles of fairness, mutual
respect, and commitment to each other. Applicants should provide evidence
of a commitment to fostering diversity, equity, inclusive excellence, and
belonging and of engagement which creates an inclusive environment in their
department/classroom in their diversity statement.
The Institutes of Energy and the Environment connects and supports
interdisciplinary teams of researchers to solve some of the world's most
difficult energy and environmental challenges. Our world needs abundant,
clean, safe, and affordable energy. Our planet needs to sustain a healthy,
protected environment. Together, we find innovative solutions that advance
our local, state, national, and global communities.
