GEOSCIENCES PROVOST’S EARLY CAREER COHORT POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM
https://apply.interfolio.com/107644
The Department of Geological Sciences in the Jackson School of Geosciences at the University of Texas - Austin invites applicants for two Postdoctoral Fellow positions in any field of the Geosciences/Earth Sciences as part of the University of Texas Provost’s Early Career Cohort Fellowship program and our commitment to foster a more inclusive and diverse Earth Sciences community. We are seeking excellent, promising early-career candidates from different backgrounds with career goals of entering into a faculty position.
The Department, the University, and the City of Austin are in the midst of exciting opportunities and growth. The aim of this program is to invest in the career and professional growth of Fellows, to both prepare them for academic positions and further UT’s critical goals of diversity, equity, and inclusiveness. This program is designed to hire candidates with outstanding scholarly records, as well as knowledge and experience in the issues and practices of diversity, equity, and/or inclusion. This program is designed to support activities that equip early career scholars with the research, scholarship, and/or creative activity and professional skills.
This program will facilitate the transition of fellows to succeed as independent investigators, and to be considered for future positions planned at UT Austin in support of the University’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusiveness. For more information about the UT Provost Early Career Cohort Fellowship program see (https://provost.utexas.edu/the-office/diversity/provosts-early-career-fellowship-program/2021-awards). For a review of the department’s recent efforts to promote JEDI (justice, equity, diversity and inclusion), please see our webpage (www.jsg.utexas.edu/diversity-inclusion/<http://www.jsg.utexas.edu/diversity-inclusion/>), as well as our school code of conduct (www.jsg.utexas.edu/people/jsg-community/workplace-issues/<http://www.jsg.utexas.edu/people/jsg-community/workplace-issues/>).
Fellows are expected to pursue independent Earth Science research in any area that complements or expands upon existing research programs in the Department. The programs within the department are broadly clustered around three themes: (i) Subsurface, Surface, and Life; (ii) Lithosphere and Deep Earth; and (iii) Water, Climate, and the Environment. The Department has strong and active collaborations among and within themes as well as between researchers at the UT Institute of Geophysics (UTIG), and the Bureau of Economic Geology (BEG), as part of the Jackson School of Geosciences. Applicants are encouraged to identify potential mentors and research groups in the Department with whom they would collaborate and are strongly encouraged to reach out to those scholars to discuss potential areas of collaboration.
The appointment is for two years. Salary is $70,000 per year, plus benefits and includes relocation funds, travel funds, and discretionary funds of $5,000 per year. The award is open to recent Ph.D. recipients in the Earth, Environmental, Atmospheric, Oceanic, Planetary Sciences or related fields; degree conferral must be within the past 3 years but in exceptional cases due to the pandemic, up to 5 years will be considered. The start date is flexible but can begin as early as January 1, 2023. Mentorship for the incoming postdoctoral fellow is a key component of these positions and the Provost’s Early Career Fellows will participate in a postdoctoral mentoring program in both the Jackson School of Geosciences and the UT Provost’s office.
To be considered, applications must include: (1) a one-page statement of research interests and background; (2) a two-page proposed research plan (references excluded), including a description of how the research will integrate with and add to existing research in the Department of Geological Sciences; (3) a one page statement on the candidate’s past diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts; (4) a Curriculum Vitae that includes employment history, publications, service/DEI work, and any record of awards or extramural funding; (5) a list of names and contact information for three references; (6) an optional COVID impact statement.
Review of applications will begin June 15, 2022. Interested applicants should submit: a cover letter; CV; research statement; teaching statement; statement addressing past and/or potential contributions to diversity through research, teaching, and or service; and a list of at least three individuals who would be able to provide letters of reference.
