YOUR POSITION WITH TNC

The Montana Director of Conservation (MDC) provides strategic leadership and support for all the Conservancy's conservation work in Montana and will manage a team of highly experienced conservation professionals including multiple direct reports with an annual operating budget of over $6 million.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The MDC serves as the principal contact to government agencies, other conservation organizations, foundations and the academic community. They play a leading role in donor identification, cultivation and stewardship for the program. The MDC disseminates best practices, provides training and analyses to best implement organizational measures of success, and develops key partnerships with public & private organizations. The MDC will identify and resolve technical issues and widely communicate solutions, innovative scientific methods, analysis, tools, and frameworks to address natural system needs. They establish the Conservancy as a major conservation partner and define conservation priorities in the area of responsibility, lead and manage team(s) which support and improve conservation efforts, and builds strategic, scientific, and technical capacity in the field.  They engage community support for local conservation efforts, negotiate complex and innovative solutions with government agencies and landowners to conserve and protect natural communities, and develop and implement conservation strategies. They will play a key role in developing long-term conservation strategies and achieve strategic goals and objectives.

RESPONSIBILITIES & SCOPE

  *   Manage and coordinate large landscape protection and stewardship activities in a complex business unit.
  *   May be responsible for leading or co-leading a whole system program.
  *   Recruits, retains and manages high quality and effective multi-disciplinary staff with responsibility for performance management, training and career development.
  *   Broad management and leadership responsibility for 15+ staff members and a budget of over $6 million.
  *   Cultivates and leads strategic relationships and collaborations with TNC global, national, and regional programs, interacts frequently with the TNC Montana board of trustees.
  *   Develops long-term strategies and achieves strategic goals and objectives and ensures appropriate systems are in place to support planning and decision-making and builds internal and external consensus
  *   Provides clear, concise, and timely communication, guidance, and decision-making; builds clarity and consensus around goals and measures.
  *   Promotes cross-functional work within conservation and across the Chapter, manages organizational processes and compliance for conservation programs.
  *   Supports the State Director and Chapter priorities; helps assess and respond to opportunities and challenges in a timely manner; provides an internal operational presence to enable the State Director to focus on key external relationships and fundraising.
  *   Coordinates financial management for the conservation programs, working closely with the State Director, the Director of Finance and Operations, and the conservation program leads to set financial goals, analyze results, and take corrective actions.
  *   In partnership with the Director of Development and Director of External Affairs raises capital and operating funds from public and private sources.
  *   In partnership with the Director of Marketing and Communications, utilizes strategic communications to advance conservation goals, and contributes to effective communications to priority internal and external audiences.
  *   Works closely with the Director of External Affairs to plan and implement local, state, and federal conservation policy and funding initiatives.
  *   May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances.
  *   Makes independent strategic decisions frequently based on analysis, ambiguous information, experience and judgment.
  *   May require frequent travel (up to 40%) domestically and/or internationally and evening and weekend hours.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  *   BA/BS degree and 10 years' experience in conservation and/or scientific practice or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  *   Fundraising experience, including identifying donor prospects and donor cultivation.
  *   Experience directing a major program or project of strategic importance, including management/supervision of multi-disciplinary teams and meeting deadlines.
  *   Experience working with current trends and practices in relevant discipline(s) and geographic regions.
  *   Supervisory experience, including motivating, leading, setting objectives and managing performance.
  *   Experience in partnership development with non-profit partners, community groups and/or government agencies.
  *   Experience negotiating complex and innovative solutions with government agencies and landowners to conserve and protect natural communities and develops and implements conservation strategies.
  *   Experience influencing, developing and implementing conservation policy and plans at the state or country level.
  *   Experience with financial management of a large program.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  *   Multi- lingual and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
  *   10-12 years' experience in conservation practice or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  *   Developing practical applications of scientific concepts and technical innovations for conservation purposes.
  *   Knowledge of methods and standards of biodiversity information systems and initiatives and experience conceiving and implementing strategic initiatives.
  *   Communicating clearly via written, spoken, and graphical means in English and other relevant languages.
  *   Politically savvy.
