I’m seeking a PhD student to work on a Health Effects Institute-funded grant starting this fall. This is an excellent opportunity to work on an exciting project and live near Washington DC. The full job ad is pasted below:

The Department of Civil, Environmental, and Infrastructure Engineering (CEIE) at George Mason in Fairfax, VA (near Washington, DC) is seeking a PhD student to work in the lab of Dr. Lucas Henneman. Dr. Henneman’s group specializes in ambient air pollution and its implications on public health and equity. The research project is an exciting collaboration between engineers and public health scientists. The student will focus on the development, evaluation, and application of air quality models to identify important air pollution sources. They will work with collaborators to link the findings to historical public health data. The research project that the student will work on has been funded by the Health Effects Institute (for details, see HEI’s announcement<https://www.healtheffects.org/announcements/walter-rosenblith-new-investigator-2021-announced>). The student will have the opportunity to work with leading scholars on issues of environmental health and equity.

Qualifications: The candidate must have a strong background in engineering, with experience in atmospheric studies preferred. The strongest applicants will have a background in engineering and strong analytical/coding skills (e.g., R, Python, and/or Fortran). Dr. Henneman is looking for a stellar communicator.

Start Date: Fall 2021 or Spring 2022. The review of applications will begin imediately and continue until a qualified candidate is found.

Location: CEIE is a vibrant and fast-growing department that offers MS and PhD programs, in addition to an ABET-accredited BS degree. During the last 5 years, the department has experienced tremendous growth in new research awards and enrollment in the PhD program. Total enrollment across all degrees in CEIE has increased to 400 students. The Volgenau School of Engineering is committed to significant investment in expansion of the department faculty and to double the current size within 5-10 years with a focus on research excellence.
