Professor Patrick Hayes’ research group at University of Montreal is currently searching for a postdoctoral scientist to work on several aspects of modelling biomass-burning emissions and related atmospheric processes as part of a team including university and government scientists. This position is funded by Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) as part of the project Biomass Burning in Canada (BBCan): Addressing Climate and Air Quality Impacts.

The successful candidate will be based at the University of Montreal’s new MIL Campus in the heart of Montreal, Canada. Montreal is home to several major universities and research clusters. Collectively, these world-renowned institutions provide a wide variety of career development and collaboration opportunities. A competitive salary for the postdoc position is based on the candidate’s experience.

The successful candidate will perform model experiments using GEOS-Chem, then evaluate the model results against field observations and contribute to a model intercomparison. The focus of the study will be on the concentrations and radiative properties of aerosols and volatile organic compounds derived from biomass burning emissions. The successful candidate will also extend GEOS-Chem with a new biomass-burning emissions inventory with support from ECCC.

Ideal applicants for the postdoc position will have:
1) a PhD in atmospheric science, engineering, physics, chemistry, or another relevant discipline,
2) strong background knowledge of some aspects of the project (biomass burning emissions, aerosol radiative properties, volatile organic compounds, etc.),
3) previous experience working with a computational atmospheric model such as GEOS-Chem,
4) the ability to work independently and effectively as part of a team consisting of university and government scientists,
5) a track record of timely completion of projects and publications,
6) strong oral and written communication skills.

Our group is dedicated to fostering an equitable, diverse, and inclusive research environment. As such, we encourage applications from all qualified applicants, regardless of gender identity, sexual orientation, religion or membership in a racialised group.

The anticipated start date of the position will be in Fall 2022, and the exact timing is negotiable. The initial appointment is for one year, with renewal for 2 additional years depending upon performance. Additional details about the position are available by contacting Professor Patrick Hayes at patrick.hayes at umontreal.ca<mailto:patrick.hayes at umontreal.ca>. Priority consideration will be given to applications submitted on or before June 15th, 2022.

Application packages should be sent as a single PDF consisting of cover letter, CV, and names and contact information of at least two referees to:
patrick.hayes at umontreal.ca<mailto:patrick.hayes at umontreal.ca> and robin.stevens at umontreal.ca<mailto:robin.stevens at umontreal.ca>
