Under supervision, the position is responsible for assisting engineers,
programmers and researchers in the planning, designing, developing,
implementing and administering of complex hydro-meteorological sensor
networks (radars, surface meteorology, soil and stream sensors, snowpack,
profilers, radiosondes, and more) distributed throughout the western U.S.
and disseminated to a wide variety of platforms via cellular or satellite
communications, that acquire, prepare, store and provide access to data for
special tasks that include adaptive sampling during scientific experiments
over oceans and over land. Supports junior researchers, interns, and
graduate students to prepare and test in the lab, and then deploy and
maintain field equipment in a variety of environments. Occasional
programming and troubleshooting of electronic components and data
processing may also be required. Supports long-term research projects that
rely on hydro-meteorological monitoring and sampling as well as keeping
current with the latest technologies and research advances. Uses
professional engineering concepts. Develops and proposes engineering plans
and specifications for equipment and instruments with limited scope and
complexity. Follows standard practices and procedures in analyzing
situations or data from which answers can be readily obtained.
QUALIFICATIONS

   -

   Basic knowledge of engineering principles and methods to perform
   entry-level professional engineering functions.
   -

   Knowledge of the fundamental concepts of the field.
   -

   Analytical skills, and strong skills in attention to detail.
   -

   Effective written and verbal communication skills.
   -

   Analytical and judgment skills to conduct analyses and develop
   appropriate recommendations.
   -

   Bachelor's degree in a STEM field or an equivalent combination of
   education and experience.
   -

   Ability to work in a team environment. Excellent interpersonal skills,
   including ability to work with a diverse group of people, to communicate
   clearly, and to demonstrate thoughtfulness and diplomacy.
   -

   Working knowledge of machining techniques, including the ability to read
   mechanical drawings.
   -

   Ability to read schematics, solder, operate equipment to test
   electronics.
   -

   Ability to operate instrument systems and laboratory test equipment.
   -

   Knowledge of laboratory, shop, and fieldwork safety procedures.
   -

   Experience with both PC and Unix operating systems. Ability to work with
   various operating systems and computer architectures.
   -

   Organizational skills to maintain laboratory space, tools, supplies, and
   equipment.
   -

   Ability to exercise independent judgment in the field and in the lab.
   -

   Knowledge of UCSD purchasing procedures and ability to procure tools,
   materials, components, and supplies in a cost-effective and timely manner.
   -

   Knowledge of Matlab, Python, or similar programming languages and
   ability to quickly become conversant in a variety of languages.
   -

   Ability to work with various 3rd party sensors and data acquisition
   systems.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

   -

   Job offer is contingent upon satisfactory clearance based on Background
   Check results.

   Must be willing to go in the field for up to two months per year for
   periods of up to three weeks throughout the year.
   -

   Evenings and weekends and irregular hours may be required.
   -

   Must be willing to perform fieldwork in variable terrain using rugged
   4WD vehicles, ships, small boats, helicopters, and small planes.
   -

   Ability to drive various vehicles and/or equipment used for field and
   laboratory operations (car, truck, forklift, small cranes etc.) and to
   obtain/maintain necessary licenses/permits for each.
   -

   Must be able to perform heavy physical labor and to work under adverse
   conditions. Must be able to use ladders, climb stairs, and be able to lift
   over 60 pounds.
   -

   Must be willing to work with hazardous materials.
