Fri Mar 25 11:58:48 MDT 2022
Portland State University is hiring a postdoctoral scholar in weather and
climate science. The postdoc will be supervised by Dr. Paul Loikith and
join the Portland State Climate Science Lab. The position is initially for
two years, with possible extension.
Research Description: The postdoc will contribute to research on evaluating
the skill with which climate models simulate precipitation extremes with
the proper driving meteorological mechanisms over the Contiguous United
States (mechanisms include atmospheric rivers, tropical cyclones, mesoscale
convective systems, etc.). Research will entail developing automated
meteorological mechanism identification software, building a robust
observations-based climatology of key driving mechanisms of extreme
precipitation, and using this climatology as a target for a multi-model
evaluation. The postdoc will also be responsible for documenting and
publishing code developed to carry out the analysis.
Qualifications: Applicants must have a PhD at the start of the appointment
and must have research experience in meteorology and/or climate science and
be proficient in the analysis of large datasets. Demonstrated proficiency
in advanced scientific programming and development and documentation of
open-source software, or a desire to develop these skills, is required.
Knowledge of synoptic meteorology, in particular over the Contiguous United
States is a plus, but not a requirement for applying to this position.
Applicants with a strong publication record for their career stage and
demonstrated effective research communication and visualization skills are
preferred.
Applicants must submit: (1) a statement of research interests and
experience as they relate to this job listing (no more than 2 pages); (2) a
complete CV; (3) contact information for three references. Further
information and the link to submit an application can be found here:

located on the PSU campus in Portland, Oregon. The postdoc will be joining
a dynamic team of scientists including undergraduate, graduate, and faculty
researchers.
