Dear colleagues,

We have an exciting PhD position on land use scenarios to support the nature network development in Europe at the Institute for Environmental Studies (IVM) of the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Do you want to contribute to a solid design of Trans-European Nature Networks, and are you interested in spatial analysis and modelling of land use change?

Within the European research project NaturaConnect a large European consortium will work the coming 4 years in supporting the design and implementation of a Trans-European Nature Network with state-of-the-art research. The Institute for Environmental Studies (IVM) at VU Amsterdam contributes to this project by evaluating changes in land use in Europe and how these affect, and are affected by the development of such an improved infrastructure for biodiversity. The premise is that by foreseeing potential land use change a more robust and resilient nature network can be established. The PhD student will contribute to this project by developing and simulating land use scenarios, collecting data on the constraints and opportunities for strengthening nature networks (e.g. on abandoned agricultural land) and in assessing the co-benefits of alternative scenarios for climate mitigation and ecosystem services.

Your duties

  * conduct research and publish results in academic journals and a PhD thesis
  * conduct literature review, perform spatial analysis, build quantitative scenarios, run simulation models
  * contribute to reporting and dissemination within a HorizonEurope project
